Overheating of the brakes is a dangerous phenomenon. Fortunately, now you can fight him.


There are complaints about the brakes - buy pads from another manufacturer. Until recently, the selection of the friction material of the linings was the only permitted way to at least somehow improve this crucial car system. But, of course, he did not completely relieve the problems. Especially often, owners of front-wheel drive VAZ cars faced overheating and a decrease in braking efficiency. Even expensive branded pads did not always save, and good intentions to improve the unreliable design were broken by the prohibiting clause of the Rules of the road - remember the words about the changes that were not agreed with the manufacturer? The plant did not indulge with a variety of options - for many years one mechanism was replicated for Samar. But then the VAZ 2110 appeared, and with it three types of front disc brakes. Consequently, at least within the framework of the “tenth” family, it is possible to change guides, calipers and other “iron” legally. However, before turning the nuts, let's evaluate the ability of brake systems.

In our test, three sets of front brakes from various modifications of the “tens” took part (see table). The first one is the very VAZ 2108 mechanism, which causes a lot of complaints, which was inherited by the new model (photo 1). The second - the "native" brake "ten" with 13-inch wheels (photo 2). Its advantage is ventilated discs. The third is a set of VAZ 2112 with oversized ventilated discs (photo 3). They are equipped with cars with 16-valve engines and 14-inch wheels. They weren’t particularly wise with the choice of pads - they were taken by the Ukrainian-Australian DAFMI, which had proven themselves in the course of comparative tests (ЗР, 1998, No. 7). They differed from the standard ones only by implanted thermocouples, which made it possible to control heating using an electronic thermometer.

Arrivals were carried out on a VAZ 2110 car weighing 1275 kg, including the driver, passenger and equipment. After a short break-in, the competing mechanisms worked out a series of brake cycles from a speed of 80 km / h to a complete stop with a deceleration of 6.5–7 m / s2. Measuring equipment recorded the braking distance, the temperature of the pads, the force on the brake pedal and real slowdown.

In general, it was not difficult to predict the result. But, frankly, we did not expect such striking differences at the finish line. After running-in, the brakes warmed up to normal operating temperature (90–100 ° C) showed an enviable unity. All three modifications with a deceleration of 6.8–6.9 m / s2 with a margin fulfilled the standards: the braking distance is shorter than 38 m, the pedal effort does not exceed 50 kgf. True, those from the G8 turned out to be more “tight”: 40 kgf vs. 32 kgf for the rest. This is confirmed by subjective sensations. The first impression when switching to ventilated kits - the brake pedal has become softer.

But now they succumbed to the heat … Poor owners of Samar and Ten with the same brakes! In just 16 cycles, the temperature of the pads exceeded 290 ° C. Arrived! Thick smoke poured from the wheels of a car frozen on the side of the road, the wheels turned blue from overheating - well, at least it didn’t reach the open flame. An additional touch - despite the cool weather, it took forty minutes to cool the hot parts. What about efficiency? Already at the seventh (!) Braking, the necessary deceleration could not be created, the braking distance exceeded 41 m, the force was 55 kgf. The thermometer recorded 189 ° C - let's remember this figure, we will come back to it. With further warming up, things were getting worse, right up to the fateful 16th cycle.

The ventilated VAZ 2110 brakes did not become hot. Their ability to cool turned out to be twice as good as that of the “eighths”. The first alarm bell sounded only on the 14th cycle - the pedal effort exceeded the standard. But, importantly, the braking distance and deceleration remained within tolerance. By the way, at this moment, the temperature of the pads reached 188 ° С - again, we fix attention on this figure. Subsequently, the temperature and, accordingly, the pedal effort gradually increased. The remaining parameters were frozen in their tracks. Arrivals stopped ahead of schedule, not reaching the limit - the calipers expanded as they heated and began to touch the alloy wheels. But still, the result shown - 217 ° С for 20 cycles - is much better than that of the Samara mechanisms. However, for the future, we note: the enlarged calipers and VAZ 2110 pad guides do not get along with every 13-inch wheel without problems. It is better to take one in which the recess for the working mechanism of the brakes is larger.

Now the highlight of the program is the large ventilated brakes of the VAZ 2112. The nuances in their behavior began at the temperature of the pads … That's right, about 190 ° C. This figure reflects to a greater extent the properties of the friction linings DAFMI, and the ability of the brakes characterize other values. So, the threshold temperature value was reached only on the 26th cycle. Feel the difference? Not only that, the deceleration remained normal, there is still a margin of braking distance, only the pedal effort is slightly increased. Further attempts to finish the brakes by heating failed. A very slow and predictable temperature increase was accompanied by the enviable stability of the other indicators. Even the alarming pedal effort ceased to increase. There was a slight drift around the boundary value - from 48 to 56 kgf. Torment stopped, as they say, for a clear advantage, after 69 inhibitions! Here are the data of the last cycle: the path is 38 m, the deceleration is 6.47 m / s2, the force is 55 kgf, the temperature is 244 ° C.

Perhaps it's time to delve into the jungle of interchangeability, where, unfortunately, complete chaos reigns. Do not look for the truth in the catalogs of the "top ten" - between the plans and the car that came off the assembly line, there is a huge chasm. In the table you will find those configuration options that are most common today. At the same time, in cars with 13-inch wheels, the “rearrangement” of brakes is in the order of things. You can be sure of only one thing - a car with a 16-valve engine will be equipped with 14-inch wheels and VAZ 2112 brakes. By the way, we categorically do not recommend exchanging them for others - it is impractical and illegal.
