Test UAZ 3153, UAZ 3160

The patency and durability of the Ulyanovsk "all-terrain vehicles" are best known to the villagers and the military. Until recently, they were the main "consumers" of UAZs.

No matter how old you upgrade

"469th", and the need to replace it is obvious. And the successor has long been known - UAZ 3160: everyone saw his photos and read articles about him. That's just on the streets of these cars can not be found. So from the point of view of a simple motorist, this is a perfect exotic. Why? Firstly, at the time of our test, the factory manufactured less than 1, 200 such cars, and secondly, the price of the novelty exceeded 220 thousand rubles - this is actually the most expensive domestic car, not counting the very rare VAZ 2110 6 and the original creations of the Moskvich factory . Let us dwell on the new UAZ in more detail.

In order to have something to dance from, as a “stove” we took UAZ 3151 9, which differs from the standard “goat” - 31512 with a more powerful engine with a working volume of 2.9 liters, improved interior trim and a metal roof.

Both cars are equipped with the same engines and gearboxes, but they have many differences. First of all, of course, the new body of the "sixtieth." And also a modified frame, a different arrangement of mounting pads on the body, another exhaust system and, perhaps, the most important - bridges with a continuous beam. Add to this that the 3160 has a small-modular transfer case with one control lever, a clutch with a diaphragm spring and disc front brakes. In general, progress is evident.

The design of the front spring suspension of the new UAZ is not much different from that installed on part of the 3151 cars. Three-leaf springs of increased length are also on the back. Recall that conventional UAZs have eight in front and seven or nine sheets in the back. We will turn to this later, but for now - attention to the body.

To sit in the UAZ 3160 is much more comfortable thanks to wider doors and comfortable footboards. True, the rear passengers clearly do not have enough internal handles that they could grab while climbing into the salon, but the exterior ones are worthy of all praises - nothing better has ever been seen on domestic cars: a large brace that just pulls on itself. The lock mechanisms work like a clock, which cannot be said about the door locks in the open state - they are too weak. Nevertheless, if we recall the double doorway seals, the contrast with the old machine will be striking. It’s almost art to close the door there, drafts are the norm, and the plastic outer handles break remarkably in the cold.

I would like to note the back door 3160, and a fairly large opening covered by it. But why does it open to the right, as in Japanese cars? Really because she was copied from there? Or maybe there are prospects for export to the UK? Let us be fair, though the door does not open in the wrong direction, but they did not regret the gas springs, and under the weight of the spare wheel it does not sag and does not jam when the frame is skewed. The trunk of the 3160 is larger than its predecessor - the rear overhang is longer and the pockets on the sides are comfortable.

Now to the salon. Everything is as it should be in a normal car - there is no bare metal, everywhere there are carpets and plastic. You can’t object to the latter, although there are claims to quality, but carpets … However, in 31519 there is also a gray synthetic carpet on the floor. But what if the car is “registered” in the outback, where on the roads there is only dust and dirt?

Inside, the new car is noticeably wider than its predecessor, and the three of them are not cramped behind. The most significant difference between the UAZ 3160 cabin is the lower landing of the driver and passengers. Sitting became more comfortable, especially in the back seat. By the way, he has an adjustable backrest.

Honestly, I could not believe that the difference would be so noticeable. UAZ 3160 easily left his senior fellow tribesman, as if under his hood was not the same engine, but a couple of tens of forces more. Meanwhile, his main pair is “more authentic”, and the mass is more solid … On the “neutral”, the “519th” seemed to roll on the brakes, and the “60th” - like on rollers. The situation is understandable - ordinary UAZs really “roll out” only after 5000 km. The bridges of the new car, apparently, do not need such a long “break-in”.

It is hardly worth saying that the 3160 is noticeably quieter on the go, but the handling … I must say this especially. Keeping a car within its range is not easy. The power steering is too powerful and devoid of the slightest feedback, the steering is inaccurate, the tires have too much withdrawal. We add that the front shock absorbers cope with their responsibilities not without difficulty. As a result, the car “floats” along the road, and the driver must be in constant voltage. We did not set the goal of thoroughly understanding the taxi nuances on the UAZ 3160, but even without this we can state: the car has serious problems with handling. Against such a background, the UAZ 3151 9 with a spring front suspension, without a power steering, seemed almost ideal - at least on a fairly even surface it is easy to follow the chosen path on it. Of course, when parking the steering wheel it’s hard to turn, and large pits and potholes are given on the steering wheel, but that's another matter.

The new car with a spring suspension is noticeably better than its predecessor on a relatively flat road - small bumps smooth the tires, and those larger ones swallow the suspension. The spring machine feels these defects in the coating much more noticeably and reacts to them much noisier. On a broken and frozen primer, where regular cars are ordered to enter, the situation changes exactly the opposite. The UAZ 3160 with spring suspension jumps like a ball, and even the driver and passengers fastened with belts sometimes fly up to the ceiling, and the 31519 multi-leaf springs scolded by everyone honestly do their job: somewhere below the bridges walk under the car, and the body only sways slightly on irregularities. This clearly shows the damping ability of the springs and once again confirms that the capabilities of the standard shock absorbers on the "spring" machine are not enough. One more thing: on large potholes, a spring suspension often breaks through.

A completely unexpected property is possessed by the new steering wheel of the 3160 model installed in both cars - it is very good … bends. It’s so good that one of the authors pinched his fingers a couple of times between him and the dashboard visor!

Here they are, real roads for UAZ! Unfortunately, the desired comparison did not work - the Elmo clutch on the UAZ 3160, connecting the right hub, ordered a long life, and it was impossible to turn on the four-wheel drive. I had to confine myself to checking the geometric cross. Despite the impressive anti-roll bar, the wheel moves in the front suspension are quite large. In the back, thanks to longer leaf springs and earrings, they are even larger than that of a conventional UAZ. The slightly enlarged rear overhang of the 3160 practically does not interfere, although the wider crankcases of continuous axle gearboxes will provide greater resistance when driving along a rut. Since the base and the ruts of the cars coincide, the difference in patency on the same tires should be minimal.

A lot of mounted plastic parts were originally mounted on UAZ 3151 9, the use of which is most often questionable in both aesthetic and purely practical terms. And if the “muzzle” protects the front of the car from damage by small stones and sand, then the side pads are frankly useless, and the “spoiler” on the front bumper greatly reduces the angle of entry - you can catch on a completely harmless mound.

What is UAZ 3151 9 is well known. Comfort in this car at least. Even with a metal roof in the car it’s still cold, and the howl of the fan of the “stove” blocks the noise of the engine and transmission. But, at least, the design verified over the years is not so scary "native" build quality.

Against this background, 3160 looks great. But, unfortunately, only on it. With similar imported cars, even comparing it is incorrect. At the same time, the price clearly makes it clear that the car could not afford the former contingent, and it was not designed for it. If UAZ 3151 9 is an obvious “demobilization” on a civilian, then 3160, in theory, should be a convinced “pacifist”. Although where does he come from in the military family?

Under the hood, the differences are minimal.

Salon UAZ 3160 almost corresponds to what is expected in a domestic passenger car.
