What to do?

What is more profitable: to replace a failed node or to restore? Listen to

to the arguments of an experienced service man, a longtime author of ZR.

Suppose you are faced with a choice of which type of repair to prefer. It seems to be more reliable to buy a new spare part. But prices bite, and besides, it's pretty easy to run into a fake or a marriage. The restored units have their disadvantages. First, God forbid, woe-masters somehow “shake up” the knot. Secondly, only the worn parts are changed during the bulkhead, and more or less lively ones are left - hence the smaller resource of the restored unit compared to the new one. But in general, the arguments on the topic of "change or sort out", taking into account all the pros and cons, ultimately run into money.

Consider the financial side on the example of several of the most frequently used when replacing nodes "Lada" and "Samar". The costs of repairs and spare parts will be considered in rubles for two options - cheaper and more voluminous (expensive). We will take domestic (factory) parts for the bulkhead, prices for components and service stations are average in Moscow. Cost estimates are given in the table.

ENGINE. Let’s estimate how much the minimum set of spare parts for engine overhaul will pull. The “Zhiguli” list includes all gaskets, oil seals, pistons, fingers, rings, liners, thrust half rings, a chain with a tensioner shoe and a damper, an oil pump with a drive gear (“fungus”), filters and four liters of oil. At Samara, the belt and related parts were replaced by a belt, and the oil pump fell out of the register - it was too early to change it at the first overhaul.

This is ideal. Now we will supplement the "Zhiguli" list to the maximum. In descending order of "popularity", the parts are arranged as follows: camshaft and oil pump sprockets, chain tensioner, valves (usually only exhaust ones), oil pump drive ("pig"), finally, a camshaft with a bearing housing and valve levers. Even less often replace the connecting rods and valve guides, and, as a rule, piece. This pair completes the full list of spare parts for Samara. In it, the line above is the belt tensioner pulley, valves, pushers and camshaft.

The amount for the engine bulkhead by the service station, taking into account spare parts, is one and a half times lower than the cost of a new motor. But do not forget about the attachments. If the carburetor, ignition distributor, starter, generator, other components require additional costs, it makes sense to think about buying a new "heart", although you will have to suffer from transportation and registration of the unit in the traffic police.

CARBURETOR. We will not list all the characteristic Solex diseases, their whole bouquet: from a small speck walking around all the systems to the deformation of the mating planes and the idle valve seat. There are fewer worries with Ozone, but you can’t call it trouble-free either.

Most often, the cost is minimized by blowing the nozzles or replacing one part - for example, a needle or some kind of diaphragm. The cost of such work is low: no need to dismantle the unit and completely disassemble. Overhaul - disassembling to a screw, washing, replacing worn parts and adjusting - will cost the motorist about half the price of a new unit.

According to unofficial statistics, for every fifteen carburetors being repaired, there is one “unsubstantial” - suffering from serious manufacturing defects. Such a unit is easier and cheaper to replace, otherwise the standard hours spent by a specialist will cost a tidy amount, sometimes equal to the cost of a new carburetor.

DISTRIBUTOR. The main sore of the “classic” distributor is the play of the bearing of the moving plate of the chopper. Constantly confusing clearance interferes with the normal operation of the ignition system. Replacing the bearing at the service station will result in the owner of the Lada almost the market value of the new device. For half of this amount, the contact group is “waved” to you - the next after the moving plate in the number of failures. Overhaul involves complete disassembly of the unit, troubleshooting and replacement of failed parts.

The dispenser of "Samara" is naughty less often than "Zhiguli". If you need to disassemble the entire “distributor” to fix any malfunction (for example, replacing the Hall sensor), get ready to pay as for a complete bulkhead.

If you are a regular customer of a car service, instead of repairing a fairly well-served Zhiguli distributor, it is more correct and cheaper to choose a new one. Surely the days of the contact group, cover, slider are already numbered. The same situation is with the Samara dispenser, even though this unit is one and a half times more expensive than the Zhigulevsky one. With a steady habit of self-repair, it is more profitable to change only failed parts.

STARTER. Most failures are due to wear on the drive gear, the Bendix. The price of this particular part is listed in the column "minimum set". The replacement work will cost three times cheaper than the cost of a new unit. In second place for failures is the solenoid relay. Replacing the "eight" (the starter can not be removed at the same time) will cost about 70 rubles, and with a similar operation on the "classic" you will have to dismantle the unit, which will increase the cost of repair three times. The replacement of several parts (for example, “bendix”, anchors or stator windings) in the service is often equated to a complete bulkhead - taking into account the cost of spare parts, this is more expensive than a new starter.

It is beneficial to give the defective starter into the hands of the masters when one or a maximum of two inexpensive parts is defective (brushes, retractor relay, “bendix”). Completely sorting it out is impractical even on its own, not to mention the service.

TRANSMISSION. If the general wear of the parts is not critical and the repair is caused, for example, by a “breakdown” of one gear, a drone of a bearing or a leak of an oil seal, a minimum set of spare parts will be needed (see the table for the price). Almost all entrails shake to the maximum. And in the first and in the second case, do not forget to add to the total amount the cost of gear oil.

When handing over the box, remember that the cost of replacing one or several parts is almost the same (if the master changes the synchronizer or gear of one gear, the shaft must be disassembled anyway). The repair of four- and five-stage “Lada” or “Samar” units is estimated at the same amount.

A gearbox is usually cheaper to sort out. First of all, this applies to five-speed units, the price of which in the market is one and a half times higher than the “four-stage”. An exception is the well-worn types of boxes that departed more than one hundred thousand kilometers. Here, the cost of repairs, including spare parts, often reaches 4 thousand rubles. It’s better to invest in a new one.

REAR AXLE EDITOR. There are only two options. The first is the elimination of relatively minor problems, such as a buzzing bearing or a sweating gland. The second is a complete bulkhead: replacing all bearings, seals, the main pair. When making an estimate, consider the "transmission".

Perhaps this is one of the few nodes that is better to entrust to a specialized workshop, rather than buying a new one or repairing it yourself. The reason is the poor quality of spare parts and assemblies.

STEERING GEAR. Of course, if the oil seal has flowed, it is wiser to change it, and not buy the gear assembly. High mileage vehicles are characterized by significant wear (sometimes even metal spalling) in engagement of the worm and the bipod shaft roller. In the service, such repair is equivalent in value to the new steering gear.

The front-wheel drive models have a different layout: the rack and pinion mechanism is more reliable, the wear rate is lower. Most often, at a minimum, a repair kit of two clamps and a plastic sleeve is enough. In the worst case (replacing the rack, pinion gear and bearing), even at a service station, a bulkhead will cost several hundred rubles less than buying and installing a new unit.

The “Zhigulevsky” gearbox is restored when the costs of new spare parts are small: for example, a stuffing box has flowed, in a pinch, it is necessary to replace a worm or a bipod shaft. If you have to shake the entire assembly - it’s more profitable to purchase a new one. Steering rack "Samara" is almost always more profitable to sort out, the more high-quality factory parts on the shelves is not easy to find.
