All good things come to an end. And when a foreign car “ends”, it is fraught not only with a spoiled mood, but also with an empty wallet.


Our wards - “Samara” VAZ 2109 3 and “Skoda-Felicia” with age began to deteriorate character. If the “nine” was a capricious young lady, then “Felicia” almost immediately turned from a sweet girl into a bitchy lady.

It all started with the steering rack. We already wrote about the replacement of the guide bush (ЗР, 1999, No. 11). It turned out that the epic with steering was only just beginning. After 55 thousand, the rake pounded again - it was replaced. But that's not all - after 10 thousand there was again a knock! Now the lower hinge of the steering shaft has collapsed.

After this repair, the Škoda hid, put to sleep vigilance and … issued the 72nd breakdown from the category of catastrophic (at cost) - the gearbox fell apart. In fact, the transmission showed itself a little earlier: the fifth gear began to “sing” quietly, there was a knock on the clutch. However, everything worked properly, and the next time the oil was replaced in the box, “extraneous impurities” were not found in it. Only now at the next inclusion of the fifth gear … she did not turn on. The lever got into the right position, but nothing but a crunch followed. The rest of the gears turned on normally, but something in the box tapped. Having disassembled the unit, we saw that the fifth gear gear “ate” the splines on the shaft. Fine metal dust ruined the final drive bearings. Some gears were also affected.

A new box costs about 650 dollars, in addition, I would have to order it and wait, because it’s not for sale (the defect is uncharacteristic, Felicia boxes are not good). A set of spare parts for repair (the input shaft assembly, reverse gears, fifth gear gears, bearings and main gear oil seals, preferably also primary and secondary shaft bearings and some other little things) would cost 10-12 thousand rubles. We went the third way - we purchased a used box in one of the technical centers with a mileage of 15, 000 km and a guarantee for 1 year or 30, 000 km. It cost 10, 000 rubles. At the same time, the clutch assembly was replaced: the release bearing gnawed a groove in the petals of the diaphragm spring, and judging by the wear and tear on the disc, there were 10–15 thousand left to live. Against the background of transmission devastation, replacing the anthers of the outer CV joints (the old ones cracked) looks like a real trifle.

In one of the trips, they noticed: the arrow of the coolant temperature gauge climbed into the red zone - the fan did not turn on. The reason is commonplace - the wiring to it, open to dirt, salt and moisture, has rotted. Restored, but after a few days, the Skoda began to twitch and stall. We cleaned the “distributor” - everything fell into place. Generally, the engine compartment is dirty! But if in domestic cars the main pollutant is oil leaking from everywhere, then here the engine and “surroundings” are flooded with road slurry. Naturally, wiring suffers. The first bell on this topic sounded even in the young warranty times - then on the Skoda they replaced the distributor cover due to oxidation of the contacts in the sockets.

After the windows of both foglights once again burst, these headlights were "liquidated as a class" (although what are they essentially to blame for?), And their places in the bumper were covered with plugs. In a word, there were more than enough problems with the machine in order to disbelieve in the infallibility of imported equipment. However, time out with emotions. As they say, it’s not yet evening - we’ll see what happens next.

The domestic opponent of "Felicia" began the reporting period, naturally, with a breakdown - the seat back "folded" in half. New purchased for almost 2000 rubles. Then a pebble hit the headlight glass, the tips of the high-voltage wires cracked, the muffler burned out, the left outside mirror broke, the needle valve in the carburetor hung, the headlight corrector broke. In addition, the notorious printed circuit boards in the rear lights were changed twice: the tracks on them were oxidized and the lamp turned on, which wander into his head. The defect is more than common on machines of the “fifth”, “eighth” and “tenth” families. Twice in a row changed the gas pump: the lever axis flies out of the body - a clear marriage. The "zhor" of oil continues: from MOT to MOT, we already add more than a liter. Electrical wiring keeps throwing rings. As soon as the street is damp, the spark "goes into the wheel." The reason is leaky electrical wiring connectors in which moisture accumulates. After the next major audit of the power grids, the problem disappeared. Or did she hide?

As you can see, the trouble with Samara is enough, they take a lot of time and nerves from the owners, but relatively little money, for which domestic cars are still loved. Even the most inexpensive foreign car remains so until the first serious failure. This simple truth, we properly felt in our own skin.

The fact that cars are aging is noticeable in the details. According to the "nine" rust continues to creep (after all, the second winter without anticorrosive), bumpers warped. The interior looks pathetic: everything is skewed, creaks and knocks. We already spoke about the broken seat. Door locks and windows work poorly, the trunk shelf sagged.

If all these flaws are against the backdrop of perfect “mechanics”, then no! Oil consumption is growing, the second gear has been crackling for a long time when it is turned on, and recently it has started to turn off spontaneously (a very characteristic defect of modern VAZ boxes). Coming is also the replacement of one outer CV joint. It seems that Samara wants to take away from Felicia the primacy in the importance of defects. According to their number, taking into account numerous minor breakdowns, she is already the undisputed leader.

"Felicia" also gives up: the paint has faded, the whole front in chips. However, corrosion resists stably. The salon, it is worth washing it thoroughly, like a new one, so that in the little things we should not compete with Europe, albeit Eastern.

But the increased fuel consumption of "Skoda" can be attributed not only to the fact that in recent years it has been operated in more stringent than the "nine" modes. Power and ignition systems require revision and adjustment. Samara is still demonstrating an enviable modesty in fuel consumption.

Cars twice passed scheduled maintenance. “Samara” - on the 60th and 75th thousand km, “Skoda” - on the 56th and 66th thousand km. When doing work on your own, using imported oils and technical fluids, maintenance costs are almost equal, since you can’t save a lot on filters.

Cars left to "live" the last 25 thousand km out of a hundred planned. If nothing happens, the next meeting with two experimental cars will be the last. As soon as a six-digit figure pops up on the odometers, we will say goodbye for good. Then we find out that in the end it will be more expensive.


So, for 72 thousand km, the fifth gear gear “ate” (did not cut, did not crush, but wiped it to dust) the splines on the shaft of the box. Such a defect, as applied to Skoda, had never been heard of before. He surprised a lot of service center specialists, where we turned in search of spare parts.

It can be assumed that such a breakdown is not caused by a structural defect, it is a consequence of a defect inherent in a particular unit. Two hypotheses have been put forward on this subject. First, the technology for processing parts has been violated: either the normal gear “gobbled up” the “soft” shaft, or the gear too hard dealt with the normal shaft. Second: the gears initially sat on the slots loosely, and over time, in conditions of insufficient lubrication (who will forcibly lubricate not running but landing slots), the splines were destroyed. We will examine the details and try to answer the question: what was it?
