Our acquaintance with Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Accent has been produced since 1994. The independent development of Korean designers was very successful, and until 1999 the car survived with minimal changes. Since 2000, a new model has been supplied to Russia: with a changed appearance, increased in size, with a new interior, known in Korea under the name "Verna". Engines - gasoline 1.3 or 1.5 liters with three or four valves per cylinder. Body - three- and five-door hatchback and sedan. It can be equipped with an automatic transmission.
Until recently, print media was full of ads like: “Hyundai Accent for 7XXX US dollars.” Of course, for this money, the buyer could only count on the basic equipment with a 1.3 liter carburetor engine, but still the price looked very attractive. aroused enthusiasm: $ 12, 998 per car, albeit with a power steering, ABS brakes, a sunroof, air conditioning and power windows - is not cheap at all, but we will refrain from hasty conclusions.
UPDATED OR NEW?
The answer is not at all obvious. Yes, the main elements of the power body frame, suspension, engine and transmission have not changed. However, the base of the machine grew by 40 mm, and the track by 15 mm. The increase in size is even more noticeable: 115 mm in length and 50 in width.
The former Accent was often criticized for its “frivolous” appearance. It was difficult to imagine the owner of the car as a serious middle-aged man, and besides, many considered the "cheerful" gamut of colors more appropriate for Christmas decorations. Hyundai designers thought deeply about the image of the Accent. Soap-and-plush motifs were replaced by a “toothy” decorative grille, a pronounced spoiler and sharp edges on the sidewalls - nothing special, but the image of the car changed radically enough to keep others from joking about its owner.
The new body is not only larger than the previous one, but also more spacious. The back seat is suitable for three of average height, although, of course, the two are more comfortable there. If it weren’t for the lower roof at the back, it would be more convenient for the taller passengers - there is a good supply in front of the knees. The workmanship of the body is almost as flawless as on Japanese cars. We found the only drawback - the uneven clearance along the contour of the trunk lid (on the left a little “narrower than on the right). However, this is noticeable only because all the gaps are very small. The trunk itself is 70 liters larger than its predecessor, despite the full-sized 14-inch spare wheel on the alloy wheel located under the mat. The metal and plastic elements of the body were painted carefully, there is no difference in the color of the parts, as well as traces of “shagreen”.
IMPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS
The height-adjustable driver's seat is not bad, but it has a drawback that is traditional for cars from Asia - a short pillow. The adjustment range is sufficient for the vast majority of drivers, but still those who are shorter will be more convenient. Those who are higher than 185 cm, it is better to choose a car without a sunroof - otherwise the crown will touch the internal elements of its design.
The steering column switches are pleasant to the touch and work very smoothly, as if taken from a more expensive car. The same excellent clarity of fixation differs gearshift mechanism. All this is very similar to the new interior of the cabin with stylish inserts made of metallized plastic and an incomprehensible material resembling rubber with shiny splashes. The only thing that seems alien is a large and simple steering wheel. In such a salon asks more solid.
On the go, Accent also performed well. The motor is “lucky” in fifth gear even from 40 km / h. I don’t feel like twisting it “to the bang”: the nature of the engine is extremely calm. However, the noise can not be said - silent at the closed shutter, at high speeds the motor “sings” too loudly even for a car with a claim to sportiness. Against the background of a silent transmission and quiet tires, this is especially noticeable. The brakes did not fail - doubts about their effectiveness have never arisen. Perhaps the effect is increased by 16 mm compared to the predecessor, the diameter of the front discs.
The suspension of many foreign cars does not behave in the best way on our roads - the selection of springs and shock absorbers is akin to art. And the subtlest of the arts is a compromise. "Accent" is well "standing" on rough roads, confidently passes turns. Although the suspension seems too stiff in a single-driver car, it does its job almost silently. The fascinating slalom process between the pits is also given much better than on the VAZ “top ten”.
The steering wheel with power steering leaves a similar impression. Easy when parking, it is nevertheless quite informative. Shocks and bumps from the road surface are almost invisible, but the payback for this is the feeling of “stickiness” in the steering mechanism, which is unacceptable for drivers with sporting inclinations.
WHAT IS THE RESULT?
Not possessing particularly outstanding characteristics, the Hyundai Accent is, nevertheless, a very pleasant car to communicate with, moreover, it was carefully brought up.
The giveaway is over. Hyundai seems to have built a car that can compete on equal terms with such famous classmates as Toyota Corolla, Nissan Almera, Mitsubishi Lancer and even - what the hell is it - Honda Civic. Korean automakers have clearly excelled in traditionally Japanese art - building comfortable cars without vivid individual characteristics. It will be doubly nice if a guest from Korea is equally reliable.
