BEFORE THE PREMIERE

PEUGEOT-307 COUPE-CABRIO

After successful premieres and the start of sales of Volkswagen Golf IV, Ford Focus

and "Opel Astra" thought

over his future in this class and the French Peugeot.

Alexander KRASNOV

The result was the 307, which will premiere this year. Her family will consist of five major body modifications and their various versions of equipment.

A three-door hatchback will appear at the end of 2000, a five-door at the beginning of 2001, followed by a four-door sedan (summer of 2001), an unusual five-door station wagon with three rows of seats and, finally, a convertible coupe, whose premiere is scheduled for 2002. This is what awaits the adherents of the French company in the next two years.

Let us dwell on the last, most interesting modification of the "Peugeot 307". As you know, the previous convertibles were developed by the French jointly with the Italian Pininfarina bodywork studio, and they were produced there in the production halls. This time, however, the car was developed by designers and designers of Peugeot with the participation of the German CTS-Dachsysteme, a subsidiary of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. As the name implies (Dach in German - roof), it specializes in the development of folding and retractable roofs for convertibles.

The construction of the hard roof here is such that in the folded position it occupies only a third of the useful amount of luggage. The operation of folding or unfolding lasts about 30 seconds, control - from the instrument panel by pressing a button (like the Mercedes-SLK).

With the top raised, the Peugeot 307 is a real coupe, pretty and proportionate. Even heating threads are integrated in the rear window. The company put a lot of effort into reducing aerodynamic noise caused by turbulence of oncoming air flows at the locks and joints of the roof panels.

The basic model with a 110-horsepower 1.8-liter engine should cost “only” 25–27 thousand dollars, and a fully equipped version with leather upholstery, air conditioning and a 135-horsepower 2.0-liter “heart” will cost ten thousand expensive.

The chassis of the new family, including the coupe, is built on the Citroen-Ksara platform (recall that Peugeot, together with Citroen, is part of the PSA concern) of the next generation. Traditional pendants will be preserved - on the springs in the front and on the torsion bars at the back, which will allow you to maximize the useful volume of the trunk. In addition, ASR and ESP systems that provide active safety can be installed as options, while the front airbags with two-stage operation, side airbags hidden in the upholstery, as well as integrated child seats can serve as passive safety.

Additional equipment includes a powerful navigation system and a new generation audio system.

In addition to the aforementioned engines installed on a convertible coupe, a 1.4-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 75 hp is also provided for the new 307 family; 1.6-liter with 90 "horses" and a pair of 2.0-liter HDi diesel engines - 90 and 110 hp As you can see, the range of engines is quite rich. The sports version of S16 is also being prepared.

If we already touched the entire 307 family, then we should say about the unusual symbiosis of a station wagon and a minivan. This car will have either three or two rows of seats, seats - from five to seven. There will be the possibility of a fairly free transformation of the passenger compartment, up to a 180 ° rotation of the third row seats (i.e. against movement). The provisional name for this car is Maxibrick.

At first, the team of designer Murat Gunak, who, however, returned to his Mercedes, worked on the appearance of the family’s cars. The work was continued by Gerard Welter, and, admittedly, the cars turned out elegant. There is a new corporate identity that began several years ago and was actively manifested in the 607. The large “slanting” block headlights, the characteristic radiator lining with a lion in the center, the steep slope of the windshield, and the short overhangs are all distinctive style elements of the new Peugeot.

The estimated production of cars of the family 307 - 400 000 per year.

Predecessors

The direct ancestor of the promising model, of course, is the "306" model, which, in turn, replaced the "309th". There are enough “kids” in the Peugeot program, and often the classes overlap. Therefore, the story of the predecessors will begin with the "309th", which appeared on the market in 1985. His code name was C28, and he fought for a place in the sun with the same classmates with whom the novelty would have to compete. Then it was Volkswagen Golf, Ford Escort and Opel Cadet.

At that time, the Peugeot-309 took a place between the small “205th” (length 3.7 m) and the relatively large sedan 305 (length 4.3 m) - we can say that it filled an empty niche. The length of the "309th" was 4051 mm. Five people were free to sit in the car, and a 0.296 mz compartment was intended for luggage. Cx car was 0.33.

In February 1993, the presentation of the new Peugeot was held - with an index of 306. This car was designed not only to win the hearts of adherents of the French company, but also to thoroughly “move” competitors. Therefore, from the very beginning, the buyer was offered several levels of interior decoration, a large selection of engines and several bodies.

Starting with a five-door hatchback, Peugeot experts added almost quarterly for modification. Soon a three-door body appeared, and in the fall of 1993, a presentation of a very effective convertible was held. At the Geneva Motor Show-94 he was awarded the title "The Most Beautiful Convertible of the Year." Then, in the spring, its production was started in the workshops of the Italian Pininfarina.

After the appearance of the three-volume sedan in 1994, the full program of this model reached 38 (!) Versions, differing in body type, trim level and the availability of additional equipment. We can say that any Peugeot buyer found for himself something that fully corresponded to his tastes. By this time, the “306th” model was produced in France, England and Spain. In France, another plant was built. Up to 70% of all “306s” were exported, and popularity was growing all the time.
