Let's break the tradition and abandon the presentation on the principle of “broken - repaired.” I assure you, there will be more than one reason to return to design flaws, failures and repair methods. We’ll better talk about the consumer qualities of the “hot ten, ” about who this machine is capable of delivering joy to and who is completely upset.

The focus, of course, is on the engine. Open the hood - solid, good-looking. But do not be mistaken: in comparison with modern foreign analogues, the 16-valve VAZ 2112 is an aggregate of the past, if not the year before last generation. Another thing is also obvious - today it is still the best domestic engine, and the VAZ 2110 3 equipped with it is the fastest and most dynamic Russian car. Other VAZ models, as well as the “Volga” with the ZMZ-406 and the “Svyatogory” with the “Renault”, as they say, are resting. Only VAZ 2110 6 with the Opel two-liter engine is able to get ahead of the “one-third”, but the output of the “one-hundred-and-sixth” is too small to be taken seriously.

Operation has shown: the neatly assembled sixteen-valve is a completely reliable power unit. Able to serve for a long time, in the intervals from one scheduled maintenance to another requires a minimum of attention. The reverse side of the coin is difficult to repair. Moreover, even routine maintenance, such as replacing the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism, is best done at the service. Such a motor - he needs really skillful hands and a high culture of service. With the latter, as you know, there are continuous problems in our country, both in the capital and in the provinces. Another minus - saving on oil can go sideways. It is better to forget about a cheap rootless all-weather season.

Judging by the letters and calls, one of the most pressing questions is: what kind of fuel should one supply “one hundred and three”? Factory recommendations on this matter are very vague - in the Operation Guide they change from one edition to another. So: for almost the entire run, the editorial car used AI-91, and a good third of the gas stations accounted for leaded gasoline. And nothing, swallowed without choking. In any case, no harmful effects have yet been manifested. But let's be honest, the “Ekstra" AI-95 engine loves more. With this type of fuel, detonation tinkling disappears with a sharp gas supply, and the car runs more fun. Recall that the engine of our “one hundred and third” is controlled by the January-4 electronic unit, and there is no catalytic converter. Owners of those cars in which "Bosch", "January" or "GM" work together with a neutralizer, you do not have to choose - such is only unleaded AI-95.

What about fuel consumption? Factory data obtained by measurements by a special method, is far from always confirmed in real life. We suggest studying the results of our, believe me, hard work - average costs in different operating conditions (Table 1). We add from ourselves: a lot depends on the riding style and tire model, hence some variation in appetite. The numbers of each row in the table are 100% mileage precisely in these conditions. The average fuel consumption in the combined city-highway cycle is much more difficult to obtain. Moreover, each owner has different mileage on the streets and on the highway. But the general pattern is obvious - the larger the share of city driving, the more gluttonous the car.

Future buyers of the "dozen", listen to the good advice: if you do not plan to move far from the metropolis, "one hundred and third", in general, is not needed! In the street, the talents of this car cannot be revealed. Do not save fuel, do not enjoy a frisky engine. So is it worth laying out a lot of money for 16 valves and what is attached to them.

The track is another matter. Here the advantages of the VAZ 2110 3 are fully manifested. It is necessary to "sink" - please, the machine keeps high speed without tension. Overtaking is a pleasure, I pressed the accelerator pedal and quickly gained momentum. At the same time, gasoline does not fly into the pipe, “one hundred and third” will delight the owner with moderate appetite.

Our findings are confirmed by owner reviews. They assure with one voice - the car does not want to drive slowly, he literally asks to press the gas pedal “to the floor”. Moreover, the temperament of the sixteen valve is so affecting people that it generates rather strange rumors. Like, the “one hundred and third” is good only when the engine has reached high revolutions, and in terms of thrust, elasticity, and ability to ride in tightness it will be outstripped by VAZ cars with the usual eight-valve. Alas, this is only a subjective assessment. VAZ 2110 3 will wipe its nose to competitors. In order not to be unfounded, we refer to the table. 2. You can sin on the selection of gear ratios of the gearbox, the features of the engine management system and much more. However, the fact remains.

There is one more conclusion: the frisky, harsh VAZ 2110 3 is unlikely to suit a novice driver. The herd of horsepower should be able to curb. To assess the effectiveness of ventilated brakes of an increased size, the nuances of controllability “one hundred and third” (and it rulitsya thanks to the original springs better than the other “ten”), some experience is also needed. In short, a good instrument is able to take a clean note in the hands of the maestro. Pigging gamma on it is impractical.

We summarize: for all the lack of advanced, by Western standards, VAZ 2110 3 ideas as a whole, it was conceived quite well. Sorry, lame performance. However, quality problems arise in any model of any domestic plant, and we are not used to eliminating assembly flaws.
