Ford Focus Test

It is difficult to understand a car in two or three days of acquaintance: many features of its character remain “behind the scenes”. Have more time … Well, it has become possible to study some representatives of the automobile tribe for several weeks - let them live in the editorial office and work. The first was the Ford Focus.

“The individuality of the“ Focus ”is in the guise of quality, reliability and a certain average convenience.”

Why did you start with the Focus? He is handsome, titled, relatively fresh, and in our market - in general, a novelty. In addition, one of the persistent applicants for Russian citizenship: no one has yet canceled plans to assemble “tricks” in the city of Vsevolozhsk near Petersburg.

Exactly a month, a blue five-door hatchback got used to the image of an editorial car: it was worn all day in Moscow and its environs, of course, went to the training ground, drove the bosses, and on the weekend became a family car: children, dogs, bags, fishing rods, market, mother-in-law, summer cottage, picnic … Finally, in order not to be considered a spoiled metropolitan, he made a small run to the North-West: he jumped into Karelia, circled Ladoga from the north and returned home through Peter and Pskov.

Of the attributes of a beautiful life, "our" Focus "had air conditioning, an audio system, an electric front windshield and a driver's airbag. The standard suspension is “European”, non-adapted. But the "brains" (the computer that controls the engine) are the most experimental. Ford specialists accustom Focus to the Russian ninety-second instead of the imported ninety-fifth.

Employees of the ZR talked to Ford ad libitum, impressions and ratings can take a half-journal. We will act differently: we divide these estimates into three groups. The first is that everyone or almost everyone in the car liked it, and secondly, that they didn’t like it. And finally, about what caused controversy and controversy. Let's start in order.

… driver's workplace, interior. Despite the stylistic pretentiousness, the interior was very functional. Neither the passengers nor, most importantly, the driver did not find a reason to be outraged by any inconvenience. Sufficient ranges of seat and steering column adjustments, well-located controls, well-readable instruments. By the way, for the run, a significant part of which took place on not too smooth roads, it was not possible to shock the Focus lounge. He squealed one “cricket” in the left door, and he quickly died. A small fly in the ointment - the levers for adjusting the exterior mirrors: they are like rubber and are not at all connected with the mirrors. In general, the front of the cabin is a rather rare combination of style and functionality. Where more often from designer “little things” there are some inconveniences, and a convenient product, on the contrary, looks gray and boring.

… engine characteristics, selection of transmission parameters. What you need for a philistine car. In any gear, the motor pulls for a long time and smoothly, without dips and pickups - as if you are going with a “machine gun”. Forgives mistakes, sometimes gross. Delayed with switching - the motor will not break into a squeal. Hurried - does not wither and does not twitch. You won’t have to push the floor with the gas pedal to get a response from the engine: I pressed myself quietly and drove off. Want faster - hit harder. And do not grab onto the gear lever once again - it will take it out in high gear. What, boring to ride like that? But it’s convenient!

… low noise. “Focus” is quiet. Only tires slap in holes and cracks and the engine at high speeds tries to growl - but the sound is deaf, as if it were thrown into the pillows. The noise level in the cabin during intensive acceleration does not exceed 75 dBA, in other modes it is much lower. External noise - 72 dBA.

… review back. Maneuvering is difficult, especially at first. The first time you drop into a cramped garage or, all the more, a “shell” - torture. You turn around, and before your eyes there are solid racks and a few glasses … To some extent, this is a retribution for avant-garde stylistic decisions.

… low ground clearance. Everyone complained about it and … turned out to be wrong. Yes, on a broken road or on a lane, Focus doesn’t feel as comfortable as domestic equipment. But it is not only and not so much in ride height. Almost 150 mm - isn't that enough? First of all, they are limited by a long low “snout” and low thresholds: if they are higher than the lower point of the car, then literally a centimeter or two. Although, with some caution, you can exit the road. Do not forget that a particular instance was on a European, non-adapted suspension.

… unlocking everything and everything with one key. Maybe this increases the car's protection from intruders, but it's hard to get used to. And the “collectors”, and with a piece of the grille, will certainly tear off the rotary cover-emblem on the radiator grill. Then dirt will be packed into the keyhole from the road, the castle will jam, etc.

… appearance. The originality of the "Focus" does not hold, but not everyone liked it. There is nothing to comment on. The tastes of people are different, because the cars are different from each other.

… suspension work. The first impression of everyone is delight. It works out small irregularities well, easily swallows potholes of a completely non-branded caliber; the car heels a little. The optimism of the capital was a little fading when the Focus got out onto a broken provincial highway. As soon as he felt the undulating Russian asphalt under the wheels, the Ford began to sway from the bow to the stern. From a long ride on such a road, shock absorbers, when heated, “weaken” - the buildup of the body is still intensifying. It is not necessary only to reproach us for having driven a foreigner onto the “killer” road. The “ten” coming from behind swayed imposingly, and its driver wondered why the “Ford” was slowing down before every bump. In a word, the suspension (considering its “parquet” foreign origin) is not bad, but there is something to work on for adaptation.

… the rear seat, which otherwise seemed cramped. Yes, after the space in front, you feel a little constrained on it. However, it all depends on what to compare with: many of the contemporaries and classmates of the Focus allow you to put back only a child with a dog. But here you can still sit and even quite a long time. The oppression of the rear passengers by the front ones is generally a characteristic feature of European cars, which is less pronounced in the Focus.

… trunk volume. The compartment was liked by those who only looked at it, and disappointed those who loaded something into it. For the latter, in the family of "tricks" there is a sedan and a station wagon.

… brakes. Subjectively, they leave a good impression, and the equipment captures quite decent figures. But the thermal load is high. A series of braking from 100 km / h showed that the brakes are warming up: the force on the pedals is growing, and quite quickly.

The judgments of the tester about the behavior of the car on the road will be of interest primarily to those for whom the car is not only a vehicle for moving in space, but also a means of self-expression, satisfaction of ambitions. Although the most phlegmatic is harmless to know what his "wheels" are capable of.

It is difficult to find fault with the “Focus” in the usual everyday driving: it is simple, understandable, and convenient to drive. Now let's go a little faster. Just a little bit so that the tires begin to squeal slightly in the corners. "Ford" still behaves almost flawlessly: a "dense" suspension, small banks, sharp, quick reaction to the flow or discharge of gas. There is, however, one “but.” The steering wheel is quite informative “in dynamics” while it is being turned. But the desired angle has been reached, the steering wheel is fixed and … the force on the steering wheel somewhere "disappears". This nature of the amplifier significantly complicates the choice of the trajectory of rotation.

We also increase the speed: the car is less and less willing to call into a turn, trying to slide with all four wheels. Attempts to return it to the trajectory are accompanied by lateral buildup of the body. In general, the initial impression … no, not destroyed, rather broken. "Focus" is very reliable in management, but do not force him to jump above his head.

Appearances are deceptive. For some reason, it seems that an equally enchanting content is hidden behind a bright style. In fact, the “Focus” was devoid of striking features. Individuality is in shape, everything else is solid, reliable and averagely comfortable. What to do, it is more important for a mass car to please many than to surprise one. This genius musician is forgivable to “swim” in the basics of physics. Most people, not geniuses, but simply educated, should have certain knowledge in different areas: to write correctly, to distinguish the formula of water from the formula of alcohol, to remember with whom and when Kutuzov fought under Borodino …

"Focus" - the most massive car that is destined to be produced in million copies. And therefore no excesses - a comprehensive "education" is needed here. It is his “Focus” that demonstrates: it does not give rise to enthusiasm for individual talents, it does everything for a solid “Quartet with a plus”, leaving a good overall impression.

The popularity of “Focus” in the developed world is, it seems, a settled matter. In Russia, he will surely win a place under the sun among his own kind of "Varangians." Becoming a car more or less massive will not allow the price. “Focus” - a hatchback with a 1.8-liter engine, equipped with air conditioning and power accessories, costs a dealer $ 17, 750. True, the company makes an attempt to sell this car with installment payments (“Ford Plan”). Another way to reduce the cost is the planned assembly of cars in Russia. What will come of it, time will tell.

The Focus that we got for a while was used as an experimental by Ford engineers. He, as already mentioned, decided to accustom him to the Russian "ninety-second" gasoline, for which he thoroughly "straightened his brains" - changed the engine control program. All the way, the Focus consumed the prescribed fuel without much discontent. But it is unlikely that such an adaptation has passed without a trace. Is this the reason for the shortage of maximum speed and extra seconds for acceleration? And why the cold engine does not want to go - twitches, as if under the hood is not a learned injection, but an ancient carburetor? However, the sample that we got is an experimental one, and experiments are carried out in order to achieve perfection.

It’s better to learn everything new by comparing it with something well-known and understandable. “Focus” was accompanied in the long run by your old friend - the editorial VAZ 2110 3. We did not plan to compare them directly, but interesting analogies can be drawn.

On ordinary Russian roads, the Focus rarely managed to break away from a less nimble Russian. The advantage of a foreign car becomes noticeable primarily on quick overtaking, when the “one hundred and third” freezes, lagging behind the “firing” “Focus”.

A lot has already been said about the suspension. Both cars are good on perfect pavement, on rough asphalt, where the Ford is overly prone to longitudinal buildup, the advantage is ours. And now we’ll take a ride on a truly Russian “grader” and stomp our feet bourgeois? Do not wait - the "top ten" shakes so that the teeth are about to pop out. The steering wheel breaks out of hands, everything rattles, creaks and rumbles. And nearby, in the Ford lounge, there is silence and grace, the wheels gently tap on the “washboard”, the body shakes slightly. Here you have the national characteristics. But on the side of the road, especially in a rut, the leggy, like an antelope, “Lada” wins back.

It is interesting to compare fuel consumption. Outside the city, “one hundred and third” is more economical. The average gas mileage for her mileage is 6.7 l / 100 km versus 8.3 for Focus. In the urban crush, Ford spends almost the same amount, while the Russian car dramatically, almost a third, increases appetite.
