In the editorial park - the first passenger diesel! Using the example of the Quartet with a VAZ-341 engine, we plan to share experience in communicating with diesel engines (fortunately, our engine is similar to many foreign ones) and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages against the background of conventional gasoline cars when working in Russian conditions.

First, a little economics. Guided by our own recommendations (ЗР, 2000, No. 4), we set off for the rare diesel “Zhiguli” in Togliatti. And they didn’t lose - the difference between Moscow and the local prices (about 10 thousand rubles) more than paid for the trip.

At the end of April, VAZ 2104 5 cost 110 thousand rubles on the banks of the Volga; VAZ 2104 3 carburetor station wagon - about 85 thousand. To calculate when the diesel will pay for itself, we recorded two prices at each gas station - from the columns “d / t” and “AI-91”. Our car consumes an average of 6.6 l / 100 km; a gasoline analogue, which almost simultaneously hit the editorial office, under the same conditions - 9.5 l / 100 km. While diesel saves 320 rubles at every thousand kilometers, which means that to God’s 80 thousand, the total cost of operating the VAZ 2104 3 and 21045 will be equal. Perhaps this will happen earlier, because servicing a diesel car is somewhat cheaper - for example, adjusting the valves is enough every 30 (and not 10) thousand kilometers …

We will return to planned maintenance, but for now - first impressions. We supplement the test of two "fours", diesel and carburetor (ЗР, 2000, No. 4), with two comments on fuel. Pleasant: the appetite of our diesel engine turned out to be noticeably smaller than that of a non-rolled car. It has never been so rare and cheap to refuel on the thousand-kilometer way from Tolyatti - we spent only 60 liters! Unpleasant: the columns at the gas station, where drivers of diesel cars are forced to drive up, not only are the most untidy, they are also often equipped with a pistol of a very huge diameter. And in the usual "four" tank, the throat is blocked by a third (see photo) …

Now about the TO-1, which scare owners of rare models. While STO personnel are not trained to operate the VAZ-341 engine, the subsidiary of the plant producing VAZ 2104 5, SPAR CJSC is forced to send flying brigades for warranty repairs. True, there were only a few cases. And in the near future, the diesel engine will officially take under the wing the service network of the plant.

However, not everyone is afraid of the unknown - the Moscow service station Gagarin-Lada (mentioned in the service book) immediately agreed to carry out the first maintenance of the first VAZ 2104 5. By changing the engine and transmission oil, checking and extending the chassis and lubricating the doors, the mechanics made an attempt to eliminate : they say that nobody will do anything to you with a diesel engine, so go to the wheel alignment and … everything (this is for 950 rubles; wheel alignment is still about 400 rubles!). I had to show a service book and “Technology for maintenance and repair of VAZ 2104 5”, which incidentally came to Tolyatti. According to the books, it turned out that at least the valves could not be turned off at the station - all the more so since the gas distribution mechanism was identical to VAZ 2108. We advise all owners of diesel "fours" to follow our example - to set the gaps according to the strength of any service station! The mechanic, however, had to grind the open-end wrench to wring out the pushers and remove the washers (the “figure-eight” device is not suitable because of the different shape of the block head). However, in reality it will come in handy only in the future - all thermal gaps were normal, which pleasantly surprised me.

Since for us, like many motorists, the stamp in the maintenance ticket (just in case of a warranty case) is more important than the routine maintenance itself, we said goodbye to this. The wheel alignment angles were adjusted in a workshop next door in 15 minutes and twice cheaper; and such a "trifle" as the headlights (the "Gagarins" seem to have forgotten about them), we sent in the right direction on our own.

Of course, it would still be necessary to check and adjust the high-pressure fuel pump for toxicity. But while there are no complaints, we decided to wait a bit … and if necessary we will look for specialists in foreign passenger diesels - by the way, there are enough offers. The next large-scale routine maintenance works - at 30 thousand: replacing the timing belt and setting the angle of advance of fuel injection. Then, we hope, there will be an occasion to rejoice over the service network.

So far, diesel impressions are favorable. Returning to the comparison with the carburetor analogue, I will summarize: yes, the diesel engine loses outright in terms of an objective indicator - power, dynamics. But if you evaluate the subjective, that is, the driver’s sensations, the situation changes markedly - a confident “tractor” -diesel has itself!

Run-in VAZ 2104 5 completed. Ahead - testing at the training ground, runs, tests … Then we'll talk in more detail.

Outwardly, the diesel “four” is distinguished by a nameplate and an exhaust pipe wrapped in a pig tail - so that soot does not contaminate the right lamp.

In order not to harm the high-pressure fuel pump, it is necessary to drain the water (sludge) from the fuel filter once every 1-2 thousand kilometers, and then pump the system.

At metropolitan gas stations, refueling pistols are usually thin, and this detail in the neck - the gasoline legacy - does not interfere. And on the tracks it is better to try on the speakers in advance … or break out the noise, solving the problem once and for all.
