We introduced readers to the prototype of the extended all-terrain vehicle UAZ 3162 three years ago. * This year, the plant plans to produce 200 such vehicles.
The base of the "large", as the new all-terrain vehicle affectionately called the factory workers, is 360 mm longer than that of the "3160th" (for the test of this machine, see ZR, 2000, No. 2). But they did not increase the rear overhang for the sake of cross-country ability - of the many elongated SUVs, only the G-Class Mercedes can boast of such a solution (for the rest, an increase in the base pulls an extension of the “tail”). The growth of "sixty-second" went to the rear doors and side windows; the wide body post slightly moved forward. In profile, the UAZ 3162 looks more harmonious than the short “sixty, ” and does not seem elongated at all: rather, the “3160th” is shortened.
It is interesting that all imported “classmates” of the “3160th” are three-door, so the “sixtieth” is a kind of unique! But its narrow rear doors are still better than the inconvenience of a three-door body.
But the “large” king-size back door. It not only became wider, but changed the configuration. In the widest place, the opening increased by 180 mm, and in the narrowest, below - by 225! The back seat "moved" back 100 mm and slightly raised, so that the rear seat is very comfortable. You can sit in a half-turn, comfortably leaning your head against a wide rack, and if you wish, even hide behind it from the eyes of curious pedestrians - almost like in the Volga.
The trunk, rather big and at the “sixties” (the Ulyanovsk testers out of habit, still from the old man “469th”, call him “dog lover”), at the “sixty-second” even more. But due to the fact that the door here, as on the "3160th", opens from left to right, it is inconvenient to load luggage from the sidewalk. But the side folding seats are double. So in the trunk four easy passengers can easily fit. Total - nine people! Of all-terrain vehicles up to 5 m long, only Land Rover Defender 110 has so many seats. By the way, its length (4.6 m) coincides with the "big" Ulyanovsk one to one!
The sixty-second interior is impressive, especially with the rear seat folded down. And if you completely remove it (for this you need to unscrew only a couple of bolts), then the length of the cargo area will be 186 cm - a whole van! And carrying capacity (800 kg) is suitable.
There are fewer changes in the chassis. The front suspension and transmission with a plug-in front axle are the same. Only the rear propeller shaft is lengthened, and so that it vibrates less, an intermediate support is introduced. To increase the load capacity of the machine by 200 kg, a sheet was added to the rear leaf springs - now there are four of them. The engine is one of two: the Ulyanovsk three-liter UMP-4213 (this was on our experimental subject) and the more powerful 2.7-liter Volgovsky ZMZ-409.
Recently, I drove a UAZ 3162 for almost a week, so my driver’s impressions have also accumulated.
The first thing you pay attention to is the steering. I remember that in the "sixties" with tires I-435A of dimension 225 / 80R16 at a good speed, the front was slightly swimming, forcing to constantly steer. Here, however, the tires are different - Kirov tires K-152, with an interesting dimension - just 225R16. The height of the profile in the marking is not indicated, but for the eye - the same 80%. These tires are softer than Yaroslavl, but a little more noisy on the pavement. On them, "big" is like a ruler. I wonder what is the role of tires in this and how will the "sixty" behave on this rubber?
On the asphalt, the 3162th is like a ship: it doesn’t feel small holes, it does not swing on gentle waves. Most likely, this is due to additional sheets in the rear springs, which means increased inter-sheet friction. But on convex irregularities and in large pits, the rear axle trembles and pushes the body more than on the "sixties."
In corners, the car almost does not heel, well keeps the given trajectory. Even with the front axle off, with a sharp addition of gas in a corner, skidding does not occur. Excessive torque immediately goes to the "internal" unloaded wheel, which turns with a screech. The same thing happens in high-speed turns, but due to the “soft” front, a small roll appears and a harsh spring suspension allows the inner rear wheel to come off the canvas. Nevertheless, the "large" and three wheels tenaciously clings to the road.
HURRY DO NOT HURRY
The car behaves quite confidently on the roads, calculated on which it was created. But it’s better not to rush here. Traction "on the bottoms" of the motor is enough, in addition, you can turn on the lower stage in the razdatka. It is controlled by one lever, moving which the driver first connects the front axle, and then gets to a lower gear. By the way, the “front end” can be connected and disconnected on the go (if, of course, the hubs are turned on). Having overcome the impassable at first glance site, I decide to repeat, turning off the "front". The "big" creeps exponentially while the engine is operating a preload. But it is worth adding gas - the wheels slip and the car stops, resuming movement when the gas is discharged. In general, the second “mud” circle, albeit with a lot of tension, crawled without a front axle - a high-torque “low” motor and good tires helped out.
As for rough roads, it’s better not to rush here, because the body strives to sway so that the car starts to "bite" by bouncing with its rear wheels. But you can’t lag, otherwise, on the big gullies, the "sixty-second", stopping one of the rear wheels, stops. So in terms of speed you have to choose a middle ground.
MORE LOAD - MORE COMFORT
The second series of races held at full load. It turned out that a stiffer rear suspension - only in an empty car, a loaded one behaves in a completely different way: there is no mention of excessive stiffness. And along the broken road, and along the "intersection" the "big" is smooth, noticeably more confident. However, in the corners there are rolls familiar from the “sixties”. But now the car is holding onto the road with all four wheels. Most likely, the rear suspension needs a non-linear stiffness characteristic to ensure comfort regardless of load. At the same time we found out that a three-liter gasoline engine with a maximum torque of just over 20 kgf.m almost three-ton (at full load) car is not enough. It is not for nothing that diesel analogues with a torque of about 30 kgf.m are common on imported analogues of this class.
There are no comments on visibility from the driver's seat, as on the “3160th, ” except that the exterior mirrors are too small. Ulyanovsk assured that large ones have already been developed and are now in the development stage. But the glass cleaning areas are worthy of the highest rating. The left brush reaches the rack itself, without “expanding” it with a layer of dirt.
But still, the most interesting conclusion from communicating with the “big” UAZ is that even after a brief acquaintance, this car is able to re-educate the most “active” driver, convincing him of the benefits of a smooth, quiet ride.
