The electronic displays at the checkpoint and in the GAZ workshops no longer count the days until it appears. Now they are measuring the days before the start of the Ataman pickup truck, the first production samples of which should go off the assembly line on November 1.

The festive bustle around the GAZ 3111 seems to have calmed down immediately after December 28, 1999, when it was announced the beginning of its production. Six months have passed since then. But if the assembly line is ready, then why are cars still not visible? The fact is that the GAZ 3111 should differ from the current Volga not only externally, but also qualitatively. This applies primarily to the manufacture of the body - the joining of surfaces, the size and uniformity of the gaps, the accuracy of installation of attached parts and, of course, the quality of painting. The process of fine-tuning stamps and debugging assembly production is painstaking, lengthy and not very clear to outsiders, but its result is already noticeable: experienced cars from the last series are very different from the first ones. By the end of summer, all 587 major stamps will take their final form.
According to the body structure, the GAZ 3111 and GAZ 3110 are completely different, and therefore their production is also almost not connected. The new Volga will be made in the new workshop, on a separate conveyor. To facilitate the work and reduce the risk of damage, the bodies will go to the final assembly without doors. The latter will be collected separately on the top floor of the workshop. A similar technology has long been used abroad.
PAINT IN A NEW
The real pride of GAZ is the Hayden-2 paint complex, the two lines of which are capable of painting 100 thousand cars a year with two-shift operation. Can be painted simultaneously in 11 colors, including four “metallic” and the application of an additional layer of varnish. The construction and equipment of this production cost $ 100 million, its capabilities are also impressive.
The painting process includes degreasing, phosphating, applying pore-filling and cataphoresis primers, sealing and soundproofing, applying abrasion-resistant plastisol coating to the bottom and thresholds, electrostatic primer, painting in two layers and applying a protective varnish (for enamels with a metallic effect). Today, with the new technology, half of all passenger cars are painted, and by the end of the year all the Volga will be painted only here. Old paint production will be closed.
"ELEVEN" TAKES EXAMS
Two years have not passed from the start of production preparation for the GAZ 3111 (the design documentation was ready in November 1998), and today there are 33 samples made using serial technology. These machines serve as experimental in a variety of trials. The car passed the test for frontal impact and rear-end collisions quite successfully, although the first experiment at GAZ on computer calculation of strength and deformation of a body was tested. Climate tests and suspension refinement are being completed. The GAZ 3111 provides for the possibility of installing an air conditioner, and this imposes particularly stringent requirements on the thermal regime of the engine. The new front suspension and steering made the car more obedient at high speed, but there are still problems there are very little time left to solve.
TEN WILL LIVE
The start of production of the GAZ 3111 does not at all mean that the currently manufactured 3110 will disappear. On the contrary, the latter is destined for a long life and more than one modernization. In addition to improved color, at the end of this year there will be another event that will not go unnoticed. The fact is that new door and side dies are being prepared for the GAZ 3110. No, this does not mean that the car will dramatically change its appearance, but the gaps along the contour of the doors will become smaller, new locks and external handles will appear.
However, some change of appearance, it seems, is also not far off. After all, if it is impossible to change the body frame, then the shape of the attached parts with such an extensive replacement of the dies is easy to correct. We do not undertake to say what the updated “ten” will look like, but it is obvious that its front end will acquire features related to the GAZ 3111. Among the technical innovations - the ability to complete with electric locks and power windows, as well as ABS. It’s too early to talk about more serious changes. It is more important for the consumer that the upgraded GAZ 3110 will be much cheaper than the "eleventh".
THEORY AND PRACTICE
Seeing new equipment in action is always a pleasure. I would like to believe that it will help GAZ to reach a new qualitative level. Actually, that's how it was conceived. And the conclusions are postponed until practical acquaintance with cars.
