HUNDRED THREE PREPARES FOR WINTER

The appearance of the sixteen-valve engine in the "tenth" family was accompanied by the transition to fourteen-inch tires and wheels.

In the cold season, winter tires are vital. It is gratifying that now the owners of such a frisky car as the VAZ 2110 3 have a choice.

Everything is logical: a new engine, increased power and, as a result, completely different speed and dynamic capabilities. To effectively manage this potential, you need, among other things, powerful brakes. So there were oversized brake discs, and they pulled the wheels with tires. In the summer, the rubber dimension didn’t really worry the owners of “one hundred third”: the majority was content with what they put on the conveyor - as a rule, this is Nizhnekamsk L5 (Kama-210) with dimensions 175 / 65R14. By the way, we used exactly this bus in the test as a base for comparison.

We felt the first surge of reader interest last winter. There is only one question: what is “shoe”? Branded rubber is enough, but it “bites”, and our tire workers, as always, are late. In the 1999–2000 season we could find only three models of winter tires of the required dimension. The forerunners were the Moscow Tire Plant (MSHZ), the Scientific Research Institute of the Tire Industry (NIISHP) and Nizhnekamskshina. Surely for the upcoming winter, something else will appear interesting, but for now, a break-in. At the same time - the accumulation of general impressions about each of the tires, a subjective assessment of their driving capabilities, noise and vibration load. So to say, work in real conditions. Then the autopolygon, where the tires are compared with each other on the reference snow and ice coatings, is already using measuring equipment. Well, now - the results!

SNOW, ICE

On a slippery road, the main thing is to stop on time. This is where we start.

SLOW MANAGEMENT. The most stable results were shown by Kama-514 and HP-2000. You feel the Kama well and thanks to this you can very accurately work with the gas pedal. A directional tread pattern also shows itself well. At least on ice, the Kama-514 slows best. "Toothy" NR-2000 is not so intelligent: in the snow, it directly bites into the coating with checkers, easily providing itself with the best result. But on the ice, it suddenly and unexpectedly blocks. In addition, NIISHP is more prone to yaw during emergency braking.

The success of the M-265 is modest at all. It is characterized by too early blocking on any of the winter surfaces, while the car always tries to turn around across the road.

ACCELERATION. The biggest surprise was that the Kama-514 "traveled" the HP-2000 not only on ice, but also on snow. The leader’s laurels for the Five Hundred and Fourteenth are well deserved. On it, when accelerating, it is easier to control traction, it does not bury itself in loose snow.

Another surprise is the success of the M-265 on ice. Apparently, a heavily “cut” soft tread found something to cling to on a mirror-like, perfectly even surface. Alas, the M-265 did not show anything outstanding in the snow. Constant slipping even with very careful traction control is the reason for such modest results.

CONTROLLABILITY. Kama-514 is again out of competition. On this tire, the VAZ 2110 3 retains - even on ice - an almost asphalt clarity and unambiguous response to driver actions. In addition, “Kama-514” is not afraid of mixed coatings, easily, without yawing, overcoming small snowy snowfalls and other winter troubles.

This tire also proved to be good on a special winter track. In fast turns, the VAZ 2110 3 first slightly “falls out” of the turn, along the front-wheel drive, slipping through the front axle. But once you steer the steered wheels slightly, while reducing gas, the “one hundred and third” obediently changes the trajectory of movement.

The arising skid of the rear axle is stretched in time: the car, as it were, hangs in the lateral slip. But the fight against him does not present any problems.

The closest in quality to the Nizhnekamsk tire was HP-2000. On the "extreme" track, they showed almost the same result. However, the extreme sharpness of Nišpovskaya rubber makes completely different demands on the driver. Slides of the front and rear axles are constantly replacing each other, which is why the movement occurs with some jerks. You’re struggling with the car all the time, and he strives to slip out of the intended trajectory. The ride is interesting in its own way, but it is necessary to give all the best to one hundred.

In everyday communication, HP initially captivates with good grip, reliable handling, especially in the snow. But sooner or later you will get tired of the constant yaw of the machine on a loose, inhomogeneous surface, of a very difficult struggle with the effect of "suction" - if one side gets into deep snow. By God, it’s possible to put up with this in some extreme situations, but in “everyday life” you want to ride easier and calmer.

M-265. The "Snow Queen" once again demonstrates its multifaceted nature. Its winter properties begin to deteriorate sharply with increasing snow cover. At first, the VAZ 2110 3 moves quite reliably to the intended goal, its reactions are logical and understandable. But here the rolled snow cover gives way to loose, and the M-265 seems to “pop up”, losing not only traction, but also the clarity and clarity of the responses. The car begins to scour, showing unnecessary independence. We have to actively work on both the steering wheel and the gas in order to pacify it.

The situation is better on ice, although the queen is so far from ideal. And I did not like the M-265 at extreme driving. A sharp, poorly predicted disruption of the front axle, no less sharp and unexpected drift did not allow showing encouraging results.

ROAD. So our "collective farmer" NR-2000 waited for the holiday. As it turned out, snow virgin land with a depth of 20 cm for him is like seeds. Here you can move in a straight line, in zigzags, sideways, in general, as you like - the car, like a ship, moves in the right direction, leaving deep furrows. Even on a snowy six percent climb, where we make the VAZ 2110 3 start moving again and again, HP, skidding with displeasure, still pushes the car forward. Now, it seems, the “ten” is already “buried” - but no, slowly, by centimeter, it is moving forward.

Other applicants for this are not capable. The Kama-514 fights the longest, confidently overcoming the snow breakers. But she, alas, at a six percent rise requires accurate dosing of traction, only sometimes with great difficulty escaping from snow captivity.

M-265 in the "horizontal plane" allows you to move quite reliably. True, the car is skidding clearly more. But on the rise, “The Snow Queen” does not want to start off in any way - only the universal L5 is worse than her.

ON ASPHALT

Winter is in winter, but even the most snowy tire sometimes has to work on a surface that is alien to it - asphalt. Here we immediately highlight the best -

M-265 and Kamu-514. They compete almost on equal footing, confidently leaving behind the rougher and heavier fellow HP-2000.

ACCELERATION. The lightest M-265, having completely forgotten its fabulous name “The Snow Queen”, is the fastest on the asphalt. “One-third” practically does not feel the winter “shoe”: it easily breaks away, quickly accelerates, eagerly and cheerfully reacting to the accelerator pedal.

Kama-514 is a little, but still inferior to it precisely in the liveliness of the responses. You have to work a little more accurately with the clutch when starting, a little more “twist” the engine, often shifting gears. These are nuances, but still noticeable.

HP-2000 in these conditions is not very happy. The extra 400–500 g per wheel are “hung” with heavy shackles on the VAZ 2112 engine, completely depriving the sixteen-valve of its advantages. It remains just to roll, avoiding sharp accelerations.

CONTROLLABILITY. "Kama-514" attracted the most sympathy. Fast (as far as this applies to cars of the "tenth" family), accurate reactions, good feedback, good coupling properties make the VAZ 2110 3 convenient in the city and on the highway.

M-265 is slightly, but inferior to the main rival. On these tires, the reactions of the car become slightly “blurred, ” and some disunity appears between the driver and the car.

NR-2000 - the tire is clearly not for asphalt driving. VAZ 2110 3 is becoming brooding. Harmless, it would seem, turns require much more effort to hold on a given path. This tire has a lower grip limit too - it starts to slip in corners earlier than the others.

VIBRATION LOAD. Once again, only Kama-514 and M-265 compete with each other. At first glance, the Moscow tire is preferable: it very gently passes seams, joints and other minor irregularities that seem to disappear from the road. However, already at 90-100 km / h, the Snow Queen begins to spank intensively at each junction, transmitting tremors to the steering wheel.

“Kama-514”, on the contrary, is felt rigid and elastic precisely at low (30–40 km / h) speeds. As the pace increases, this tire becomes more comfortable and does not tire of the detailed transfer of irregularities to the body.

NR-2000 has a peculiar impression. With it, all poorly fixed panels come to life in the car: the interior is filled with taps and creaks. But when hit by holes and bumps, the tire gives a feeling of unshakable confidence in its strength. The suspension seems to acquire additional capabilities - so "impenetrability" of the HP-2000 helps it deal with the surprises of domestic roads.

NOISE. The alignment of forces remained unchanged. Kama-514 and

M-265 go flush. Their impact on comfort in the VAZ 2110 3 is minimal. But with the growth of speed, “Kama” again takes the lead, gently breaking away from competitors.

NR-2000 against the background of "quiet" brothers immediately reminds of itself with a characteristic monotonous hum: it is especially noticeable at 40-60 km / h.

ASSEMBLY QUALITIES

None of the tested tires did not cause any complaints. The M-265 seemed to be the softest and most flexible; they were most likely to sit on discs. Installation of Nizhnekamsk products also did not cause difficulties. However - apparently, in a hurry (“Kama-514” “appeared alive” only in November-December 1999 and came to us with the “experienced” stamp) - the creators forgot to “draw” the ill-fated arrows indicating the direction of the tread pattern. I had to rely on my own experience. NR-2000, as befits the most rubber-consuming product, slightly tormented with "oak" sidewalls, but still yielded to the power of the machine.

SUMMING UP

"Kama-514." A typical example of winter "shoes", well adapted to the conditions of such a metropolis as Moscow. The capabilities of this tire are very well balanced, which provides the VAZ 2110 3 with excellent performance not only on snow and ice, but also on asphalt in all its winter manifestations. Due to this, it is not necessary to adapt to the Kame-514 - the car retains the uniqueness and predictability of reactions in most road conditions. Only in deep loose snow is this tire not effective enough, which somewhat limits the capabilities of the car.

"NIISHP-Rally-2000" is all woven from contradictions. In the snow, its trump card is cross-country ability: a “toothy” tread allows you to feel very confident on the roads. It is also interesting for its tough, sporty character, which gives the VAZ 2110 3 some zest in terms of handling and acceleration. However, in everyday life, fighting qualities are burdensome because of the constant desire of the machine to create an acute situation. Suddenly it turns out that the benefits of HP are good only for a narrow range of weather conditions. On the ice, problems appear due to the limited capabilities of the checker tread. And on asphalt, the tire makes the car sluggish and phlegmatic, just a monotonous rumble recalling its true purpose.

M-265. Winter "Snow Queen" can be called a stretch. The tire, of course, is preferable to the base L5, but it is definitely inferior to the more tenacious colleagues - Kame-514 and HP-2000 on snow-ice coverings. On the pavement, the situation is changing for the better. Here, the M-265 is in its native element, and the VAZ 2110 3 clearly and vigorously reacts to the actions of the driver.

A good option for winter off-road and for those who like to fight with a car. This tire is quite specific, but in experienced hands it will be necessary and useful.

“Snow Queen” in the snow is not the best option, sometimes even dangerous. But still, for those who are looking for some all-season compromise, the M-265 is a good option. Lightweight, but rather “toothy” - than not an all-weather tire for dirty, slushy weather.

“Kama” did a great job, once again proving that it is better to choose tires, like any shoes, according to the season.

RUBBER HARDNESS BY SHORE - an indicator characterizing the formulation of the rubber compound. The lower the hardness, the softer the tread layer, the more actively the tire works on a snow-ice surface. However, at the same time, it becomes supple in the lateral direction, wears out faster. Therefore, it is impossible to unambiguously formulate the dependence of the coupling properties of a tire on its hardness, too many factors must be taken into account here. As a rule, the hardness of winter tires suitable for studding ranges from 55 to 65 units. But there are deviations in both directions.
