Hyundai Avante test, Kia Spectra
TWINS OF TOMORROW
Different automobile markets have different requirements for cars.
Among the European debuts of the Paris Salon is the updated model KIA Sephia III. In Korea, the car has been sold since the spring of this year under the name "Spectra". So far, only a sedan with gasoline engines of 1.5 or 1.8 liters and a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
In the spring at the Turin Salon, the Hyundai company showed the Elantra. The new model of the golf class, which replaced the Lantra, is available with sedan or five-door hatchback bodies, and later a wagon will also appear. Equipped with 1.6 petrol engines; 1.8 or 2.0 liters, as well as a two-liter turbodiesel, paired with a mechanical five-speed or automatic four-speed gearboxes. In the Korean market, the model is known as the Avante XD (1.5 or 2.0 liter engines).
Different automotive markets have different requirements for cars. Here, legislation, taxes, roads, traditions play a role. It is no accident, therefore, that models initially oriented to a certain market will not officially get to another. And if they get, then under a different name, with different motors and "stuffing."
In this case, a different precedent: a pair of "purebred Koreans", unofficially imported, visited our test - "KIA Spectra" worth $ 18 thousand and "Hyundai Avante" for $ 19 thousand. In autumn, these cars will appear at European dealers - first "Hyundai", then KIA, then they can be expected in Russia. In a sense, these are aliens from the future. (By the way, more about different markets - under the name "KIA Spectra" in America for several years now a model is sold that we know as the "Noise", and this is just a modification of the "Sepia II" with a hatchback body.)
Two “Koreans” are united not only by similar biographies. They look like twins, and the same black color only enhances the similarity of a certain averaged design. It seems that everything is in order: the lines are modern, the lanterns are pretty, chrome in moderation, but turned away - and forgot. The shortage of bright corporate identity is the weak point of most cars from Asia. And they are just starting to get rid of it. The most memorable of the appearance of KIA is the gray plastic radiator lining, which you seem to have forgotten to paint. In the middle, a plate shining blankly shines under the emblem. The icon itself, now new with the inscription “KIA Motors”, is located a little higher - on the hood.
A careful look reveals another difference: the Spectra boasts 14-inch wheels, the Avante has an extra inch. The rest of the running gears of the cars are more than similar: both the one and the other “MacPhersons" with stabilizers on the stretchers “in a circle” have single levers in the front and three links at the back. The difference is only in performance. The same with power units - one and a half liter sixteen-valve with four-stage "automatic". It seems as if the designers were peeking at each other in the drawings. Really in South Korea have found the recipe for the perfect car? We'll see…
First, let's look into the salon. Twenty five again! Gray plastic upholstery and velor seats, "walnut" inserts on the panels … Everything is so similar that, when changing from a car to a car, you have to look every time to look at the logo on the steering wheel hub. However, we will not find fault, this is more a feature than a drawback. Moreover, both salons are pleasant in appearance, quite spacious for four, and with some reservations, for five people - passengers sitting behind 180 cm tall will find about 10 cm of space in front of their knees. Drivers are offered five mechanical seat adjustments and height-adjustable steering wheels. The latter are very thin in cross section. Handbrakes are not very convenient, and the door lock buttons are invisible from the outside.
There are cars and individual features. At "KIA Spectra" the doors, especially with the windows down, are slammed shut with tin banging, the inner door handles are small, the volume of the glove box is small. The driver is unlikely to like the ignition switch located in the invisible zone, the small exterior mirrors and the vertical heating strands looming in the inner window on the rear window. Blue dials with white scales, no doubt, are pretty, but they are not read in the best way.
First of all, the advantages of KIA will be appreciated by forgetful drivers: the key cannot be pulled out of the ignition switch if the selector of the “automatic machine” remains in position “D” (drive), and the selector itself cannot be removed from “P” (parking) until the brake pedal is pressed . Another plus - the split folding backrest of the rear seat - transport long loads to your health. The safety concern is curiously presented - on the trunk lid there is a special handle inside, in case someone is accidentally shut.
"Hyundai Avante" can be blamed for the excessively massive front panel, which rests on the knees, not very comfortable hard seats, suboptimal external light connection scheme (through the ignition switch), lack of locking of the "machine" selector. And also with a sophisticated remote control for heating and ventilation, a traumatic lock on the trunk lid, which is also not transformed. The asset includes an easily accessible and illuminated ignition switch, a large number and capacity of various "glove compartments", fully lowering rear windows, backlighting on the doors, and the overall impression. The car looks a bit richer than a test mate.
FIVE LITERS WITHOUT “MECHANICS” - MONEY FOR THE WIND?
Of course, I must say that every car will find its buyer, that it will be nineteen seconds to accelerate to “hundreds, ” which the cars really showed, in principle, are sufficient for a calm, accurate driver … That's it. But, honestly, would you agree, having paid a lot of money and having more than a hundred forces under the hood, to get ahead at the start from a traffic light only trucks and leisurely summer residents? Here we are too.
Forced motors are high-speed, but have a relatively modest moment. Therefore, when paired with an automatic transmission, they require a “soft” torque converter so that the engine can quickly reach maximum power mode. As a result, the transmission becomes “rubbery" - it seems as if the tachometer needle was tied directly to the accelerator pedal .., untying the speedometer at the same time: stepped on the gas, the engine roared in good faith, and the car, as it were, was driving, only indicating overclocking tendency.
However, the reaction to the actions of the accelerator pedal, say, when overtaking or in other situations, can be somewhat improved by turning off the overdrive, or even moving the selector from position “D” to “2”. We note in passing that the Hyundai provides not only the usual, but also the winter (hold) mode of the “machine”, which reduces the risk of slipping on slippery surfaces. At KIA, acceleration is accompanied by tangible jerks when switching and the engine roar. The point here is not so much in the loud engine, as in the ineffective sound insulation, "passing" and the rustle of tires, and the whistle of the wind.
The “rubber” theme started by the drivetrain is developing, albeit not so actively, by steering. With the usual, quiet maneuvering - everything is okay. With a sharp turn of the steering wheel, both cars for some time comprehend the command, simultaneously giving the driver the opportunity to change his mind, then “squat” on one side and only then begin to change the trajectory. If the speed turned out to be too high, they slide smoothly with all four wheels to a larger radius, making a timid and easily suppressed attempt to go into a shallow skid. In general, understandable, predictable, although slightly thoughtful cars. The differences between them are minimal, however, we note: "Hyundai" is still a little "sharpen."
The soft suspensions of both Koreans swallow small irregularities well, but large ones have to slow down - the buildup of the body is growing rapidly and the shock absorbers are not able to extinguish it. At Hyundai, this is accompanied by a knock on the front struts - they have little rebound. Off-road qualities, as far as one can talk about them in this case, are approximately equal: the KIA engine compartment is protected from below by a metal "ski", which Hyundai can counter with a slightly higher ground clearance.
Something does not loom a portrait of ideal cars … Although from what bell tower and which market to look at. In order to creep law-abidingly in traffic on ideal “everlasting” Seoul asphalt - just right. But in order to confidently perform slalom between Russian potholes, the twins will have to work on characters. As, however, and over prices.
“Leave the ambition, everyone sitting here. Relax and go quietly ”- this is about“ KIA Spectra ”and“ Hyundai Avante ”. The difference in cost is quite justified, but the prices themselves clearly need a radical adjustment.
The editors thank Altek dealership for the cars provided for the test. Information about the sale is in the section “Dealer Prices”.
