“Glue the crack”, “glue the patch” - this blows with something unreliable, flimsy, temporary. Agree: “brew”, “tighten”, “rivet” sounds much more thorough. And still there are situations when the temptation is great to do without removing and disassembling the damaged node. And sometimes drugs from tubes are the only hope to get home under their own power.
Today, hundreds of adhesives and sealants from various companies are on sale. Probably, to test everything and determine the best theoretically is possible, but hardly necessary. The driver, most likely, will not remember the name of the winner of the comparative tests - such purchases are often not planned in advance. When it comes to it, they simply run “behind the sealant”. Therefore, it would be wiser to make a mini-review of drugs of different classes - a sort of cut of a typical assortment of a car chemistry store. Moreover, the majority of adhesives of different companies are similar in composition and properties, and the texts on the packaging, such as “unique formula”, are nothing more than advertising.
So, going into the first car chemistry store we got, we scored seven samples of what is being converted from liquid to solid. Elastic compounds capable of combining rubber with metal and allowing separation of glued parts topped the list, and completed - durable and heat-resistant, simulating welding. All drugs manufactured in the USA - European, rarely enter our market. Let's call them.
Sealant Black weatherstrip adhesive of Mar-Hyde firm (price 137 rubles for 148 ml).
Perhaps the most fluid in its class. Leaving the tube, it just spreads out in a puddle in the first seconds, which is inconvenient for sealing the joints and connectors of the units - you have to apply the product in three or four layers, with an intermediate drying of 5 minutes. But it is ideal where it is difficult to lay a dense composition, for example, between the body and the glass seal. It is very convenient for sealing threads: a screw or a stud is “wetted” instantly over the entire surface - there is no need to rub the sealant between the threads. In addition, Mar-Hyde can be very successfully used for other purposes - for painting any materials, including “greasy” plastics, in black. But in general, drugs of the “sealant-gasket” class are of the same type and it’s not easy to single out some particularly outstanding ones. So, our white “Hermesil” will yield little to three to five times more expensive multi-colored “Americans”.
Sealant for glass seals Windshield, Glass & Sunroof Sealer company "Pro Sil" (price 77 rubles per 30 ml).
Unlike the previous one, it is made on a less volatile solvent and even more slowly creates a surface film - therefore, it better flows into the gap between the glass seal and the body. Having dried, it forms a whitish-transparent, elastic, like rubber, substance. Adhesion to any materials is quite high, but it is inconvenient to use Pro Force as an adhesive - it dries slowly.
Valko glue HV-350 (price 153 rubles per 95 ml).
It is similar in color to “About Forces”, but opposite in purpose. For sealant, it is too strong and will turn any detachable connection into one-piece. At the same time, in spite of its high strength, the hardened adhesive is flexible and, according to the company, does not break even with a 600% stretch. An ideal case of using the HV-350 in a car is gluing new glass into a block headlight, instead of a broken one. It dries much faster than the same Hermesil. And in general, in all cases when it is necessary to glue firmly, but elasticly and epoxy materials are not suitable because of their fragility, the green tube from Valko will be just right.
Two-component adhesive Quick Steel epoxy company "Versa Kem" (price 168 rubles for 60 ml).
In terms of strength, the expensive American epoxy is probably inferior to ours - quite fragile, but otherwise solid advantages. The components of black and white are very convenient to mix in a proportion of one to one, and the composition polymerizes in just 4 minutes. In general, those who had to fiddle with our bottles and vials, soaking their hands with sticky tar and waiting hours for solidification, would appreciate “fast steel”.
Putty for exhaust pipes Exhaust System joint & crack sealer company "Kvalko" (price 98 rubles for 142 g).
As experience has shown, such tools are ineffective. It is still possible to stop the breakthrough of gases in the regular joints of the exhaust system, flanged or “pipe in pipe”, but it is useless to cover the crack in the wall of the pipe or the silencer body - the sealant will quickly fall off with a layer of rust or scale, like a plaster from a rotted piece of wood. The heat resistance of the “exhaust” putties is also below all criticism - a few seconds in the flame of a blowtorch is enough to burn out the organic binder and the lump of sealant crumbles into powder.
Putty White Titan firm "Hi-Ger" (price 92 rubles per 57 g).
"White titanium" is a layered roll of two multi-colored components. Having cut off a piece, it is necessary to carefully knead it in your hands, like plasticine, to a uniform color - after 5 minutes the composition will harden, and after an hour it will completely polymerize. Some of the properties declared on the label are partially confirmed - putty is really strong and it is not easy to flatten its lump with a hammer. But the hardness of 85 units according to Rockwell is out of the question - the composition is easily scratched with a screwdriver. He holds the required 260oC without losing strength, but the "welding substitute" sounds too loud - the blowtorch quickly makes the "White Titan" an implacable sentence. And the common drawback of all “fast steels” and “cold welds” is that the strength of the composition itself exceeds the adhesion strength of the joined surfaces, therefore, where the contact area of the connected parts is small, no glue in the world can be compared with welding or soldering.
