BOSCH LIGHTED IN RYAZAN

Bosch-Ryazan is developing new types of reflectors and headlights for us.

The headlight is one of the oldest attributes of a car. However, real progress in this light business began with the invention of an incandescent lamp that is resistant to vibration and shaking. Its bright yellowish light immediately created the problem of blinding oncoming drivers of “self-runaway crews”, and it was Bosch’s designers who managed to find a radical solution already in 1919 - a two-filament lamp with low and high beam modes.

From the course of school physics, we know that a luminous point placed in the focus of a parabolic reflector gives a parallel beam of light. This is ideal. In fact, the filament has quite tangible dimensions and cannot fit in the whole focus in any way. Plus - inaccuracies in the manufacture of the paraboloid, the installation of the lamp … As a result, the beam always diverges and in any case will never be what the standards require it to be. Therefore, in the headlight you can find both opaque screens and corrugated glass in a rather bizarre way. In fact, this corrugation is the essence of a combination of precisely calculated prisms and lenses, which ensures a given light distribution. By the way, the lens-prismatic lens is also an invention of the Bosch, which has been living in the headlights since the 1920s.

The worst enemy of headlights was always corrosion, ruthlessly corroding the reflector. With the advent of halogen lamps with significantly higher light output, but also heating up to huge temperatures (even ordinary glass became unsuitable for their bulb), increased demands were also made on the material of the reflector and its coating. And the use instead of metal … plastic seemed something from the realm of fantasy. However, Bosch developed a headlamp with a reflector made of Lomix thermoset material. Now they began to produce this in Ryazan - for the VAZ 2110 car.

The new material made it possible to make a reflector of a very complex geometric shape - it was called a “variable focus” reflector. The refinement of its configuration required complex computer calculations. But the lens-prismatic lens has now been dismissed, and the headlamp glass, smooth and transparent, has only a protective function.

New headlights quickly became fashionable, especially since they made it possible to increase illumination by a factor of 1.5 at a low reflector height (95–105 mm), and therefore fit perfectly into the aerodynamic bodies of modern cars. Of domestic cars, the first Niva VAZ 2123 acquired these so beautiful “eyes”.
