And yet I took a chance - in the fall of 1995 I acquired RAF-2203. Year 1987, mileage, according to the "second" owner, about 850 thousand km. The condition is generally good, but the body was repainted and the “insignia” of the taxi fleet were visible on it.

5 years have passed. The odometer counted another 320 thousand km. Daily operation in Moscow and the region with constant transportation of goods was a good test for the car. Let me share my experience. After all, thousands more RAFs roam the country, and tens of thousands of motorists are wondering if they need a big family car.

ENGINE. Of course, “four hundred and second” is not a masterpiece, but not as bad as some people think of it. Over the course of two hundred thousand kilometers, it slowly ate butter. Every 80 thousand km, it required the replacement of piston rings, liners, oil seals - everything is traditional. Once I replaced the pistons and the water pump. Before the run, 227 thousand km suffered. But when the oil pressure dropped to almost zero, the gear teeth of the camshaft drive were cut off, and the oil consumption increased to 0.8–1 L per 1000 km, I decided to disassemble the engine.

The crankshaft was ground and carefully balanced assembly with the flywheel and clutch. From the new head of the block removed 0.4 mm of metal, slightly increasing the compression ratio. I cleaned the intake channels from burrs and burrs and slightly polished the “intake”. I installed a Solex carburetor, an air filter from VAZ 2108, a contactless ignition system with a Hall sensor, and a new generator. The lubrication system received a new filter - quick-detachable, as in the Zhiguli. In the cooling system, I replaced the standard radiator and fan impeller with a radiator from GAZ 3110 and an electric fan from VAZ 2103. The thermostat valve was adjusted to start opening at 82 ° C. He removed the “native” exhaust system, leaving only the exhaust pipe from it. Now a silencer from the VAZ 2108 is registered here.

TRANSMISSION did not cause much trouble during operation. Replaced the extender gearbox assembly with the secondary shaft, the driveshaft and the rear axle assembly at 203 thousand “my” kilometers. The old one coped well with its duties, but the bearings were changed twice in it and the noise of the gearbox became unbearable at the time of replacement. Clutch discs for me are 100 thousand km.

FRONT SUSPENSION. Nothing new appeared in it, except for gas shock absorbers of the Plaza company from St. Petersburg and a couple of new springs. It requires bulkheads on average once per 80 thousand km. And “syringe, syringe” … While the parts are completely new, I used TAD-17 for this. After driving 5-7 thousand km, I switched to TAP-15. How often to syringe? In dry weather - once a month, in wet - once a week. Bearings of the hubs of the front wheels with proper operation serve up to 180 thousand km.

REAR SUSPENSION. The ancient construction is simple and reliable. Once replaced the springs: the root leaf was almost frayed in the place of contact with the anti-creak washer. Rubber bushings work on 40-50 thousand km. Shock absorbers Skopinsky plant (SAAZ) is enough for 90-100 thousand km.

BRAKE SYSTEM is imperfect. Hydraulic vacuum amplifiers, located behind the left front wheel and washed by streams of water and dirt, work in difficult conditions and require constant attention. Any changes in design are contrary to the requirements of traffic rules, so the owners of RAFs can only sympathize. One thing pleases: there are enough brake pads for 80 thousand km.

BODY. In RAF it is something “living”, creaky, but beloved. It can accommodate all or almost everything. A sofa, two armchairs, a table, a TV, a vacuum cleaner, several bookshelves, a large gas bottle and tiles. There will be room for four passengers. Here it is - the main advantage of a minibus. For five years, he never used the services of trucks, although he built a cottage and survived two apartment changes. Of course, the old body sometimes requires welding, painting and a bit of Movil. Only once he let me down - March 8 this year. When the charming lady left the salon, the passenger door fell off … The old axis of the door hinges frayed and burst, the second hinge could not cope with the increased load. The incident was experienced with a laugh.

A few words about heat. He designed and manufactured the interior heater - the regular one could not cope with his duties. He changed the heater connection diagram, installed an additional electric coolant pump, as well as a partition separating the engine compartment from the radiator and the oncoming air stream. Now at -20 ° C in the cabin +20 … 23 ° C, the glasses are dry and clean.
