Under the hoods of ordinary-looking “nines” and “ten” motors of very enviable power can be hidden. And most importantly - such cars are no longer at the training ground, but in the store.

The last report on this car in the magazine dates back to August 1998. Since then, a lot of water has flowed. Today the most powerful “top ten” - VAZ 2110 6 is assembled by the Togliatti company Lada-Tul.
The new “one hundred and sixth”, although it has acquired an updated plastic “body kit”, it, as before, is easy to recognize by its widely spaced fifteen-inch wheels. Under the hood of the VAZ 2110 6 on a special subframe is a two-liter power unit from Opel-C20XE (photo above). The result was a completely “different car”, including some differences in the body, front and rear suspensions. As standard equipment - power steering German company ZF.
The interior is noticeably different from the usual one - a leather steering wheel, custom-made seats, an "opelevsky" gear lever with a reverse lock ring, a combination of instruments with a speedometer of up to 240 km / h (in the standard - 200). However, the main thing in this machine is the power unit is still a stranger. Yes, of course, it is powerful, reliable, modern, but far from the last novelty in the world of engines. Only the “ten”, albeit with a rocket engine, for 330 thousand is a bust.
Much more interesting is our "answer to Chamberlain."
This car is a VAZ 2109 9 / "> VAZ 21099–91 with a VAZ-415 rotary piston engine. We talked about Samara with RPDs back in December 1997. It doesn’t matter to anyone that the angular VAZ 2109 9 /"> VAZ 21099 - yesterday: mediocre aerodynamics pulls higher fuel consumption and modest performance compared to the top ten. But there is a belief: previous models are always more reliable! This fuels their popularity.
So, "ninety nine" with the RPD. The fact that it is the rotor under the hood, not everyone will guess from the outside. But a meticulous car enthusiast will notice something unusual: an oil cooler “looks through” in the bumper … and the engine crankcase sticking out from below looks unusual. Let's open the hood (photo below).
The first impression is a toy engine! Somewhere in the depths of the engine compartment, the “Volgovskiy” air filter housing is guessed, which almost completely covers the motor.
Its peculiarity is the end inlet: the channel for supplying the fuel mixture fits perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the rotor, from the end. This scheme allows you to increase the engine torque in the lower part of the operating speed range, to make its characteristic more gentle, eliminating pickups at one speed and shortage at others. After all, there is a radial inlet - when the channel is located in the plane of rotation of the rotor. For a number of reasons, this allows for higher power, but somewhat narrows the operating range.
The carburetor is preparing the fuel-air mixture - the Solex familiar to us. Of course, with their own, according to engine requests, adjustments.
The ignition system is similar to the microprocessor “eight”, but is supplemented by a backup ignition unit (BRZ), which allows the main system to get to the garage if the main system fails. In each section of the engine there are two candles: the main one is the ignition one, the additional one is the afterburner.
A nice feature of the RPD is the ease of maintenance. There is no gas distribution mechanism - there is no labor-intensive operation to adjust valve clearances. All maintenance comes down to replacing oil, filters and spark plugs. The RPD machine differs from the usual one in brakes as well - they have larger diameter ventilated front discs and 14-inch wheels from the VAZ 2112. From it the same gearbox and clutch increased dimension.
The sound of the “one hundred and sixth” motor seemed to be specially tuned: if you press the gas, it’s just a hurricane! Nevertheless, it does not press on the ears, although it excites the blood.
Acceleration from a standstill is impressive! But this is not the main thing. A powerful engine provides not only excellent starting dynamics, but also good elasticity - the “one hundred and sixth” rides well already from one and a half thousand revolutions. And with four, the engine opens a “second wind”, and the car reaches maximum acceleration in each gear. (This is also evident from the technical characteristics: the maximum torque is 196 N.m - almost twice as much as that of the Lada - the engine develops at 4800 rpm.)
Overtaking with such an engine turns into pleasure, and most importantly - they become safer. There is no need to accelerate the “down” gear for greater acceleration, just stomped on the pedal - and fired! At the same time, the fifth gear feels like “working” already at speeds of 50-60 km / h. And the maximum speed is achieved precisely on it, and not on the fourth, as on ordinary VAZs, where the fifth is “economical”. In the gearbox VAZ 2110 6 a sports range of gear ratios is installed.
And what will the "ninety-ninth" answer with the RPD?
The sound of this motor is fascinating from the first notes. Instant, you barely touch the gas pedal, a set of revolutions, as if there is not a single gram of inertia! And in fact - the inertia of the rotor (when compared with a pile of metal: crankshaft, flywheel, connecting rods, pistons …) is small. He has practically nothing to move “reciprocatingly” - the fuel burns out, and you know untwist yourself! And the driver will not notice vibrations - in comparison with the piston RPD (especially - two-section!) It is much better balanced.
And therefore, the start is perceived as a shot. The speakers of this car, too, do not hold! Presses into the seat no worse than "one hundred and sixth." Interestingly, even in this mode, starting is unusually soft and smooth. For normal driving, 10-15 mm of the gas pedal is enough! And if you press a little more, then the amazing abilities of the motor are revealed. For example, in second gear, without any discontent and exertion, he accelerates the car to 120 km / h … and higher! 8000 rpm is not the limit. Of course, there is no risk of "meeting" the pistons and valves, but the strength is not unlimited! In addition, lubrication and cooling systems such a “twist” is also hardly like. It’s useful for the owner of the RPD to know all this.
So, what will they take money from a potential buyer? If we estimate the maximum speeds, 212.4 km / h at “one hundred and sixth” and 192 km / h at “ninety-ninth” with an RPM, then the difference is 20 km / h, to put it mildly, noticeable. But there are no miracles! Indeed, the usual "ten" due to more advanced aerodynamics significantly exceeds the angular VAZ 2109 or 21099 in speed.
And here in the arsenal of “one hundred and sixth” - the extra 15 liters. with.! Higher the "foreigner" and maximum torque. True, the accelerating dynamics of the car also depend on the gear ratios of the box and the main transmission, the dimension of the drive wheels. But still, the “one hundred and sixth”, despite the extra 100 kg of curb weight, has advantages. Take a look at the acceleration time to 100 km / h. Not in favor of the RPD (which, naturally, is natural) and the "economy": if the VAZ 2110 6 at a speed of 90 km / h consumed 6 l / 100 km, then the VAZ 2109 9 / "> VAZ 21099 with a RPD of 8.1 l / 100 km The increase in speed only exacerbates the picture.
But do not rush to blame the "rotor" for excessive gluttony, first a little arithmetic.
Let “one hundred and sixth” against RPD save 2 liters of gasoline per “hundred”. But the difference in the price of cars is more than twofold. The one who bought the “rotor” and not the “one hundred and sixth” will have “extra” 170, 000 rubles in his wallet. And this is either another “dozen” with a heavy tail, or almost 25 tons of gasoline, which even a gluttonous rotor will have enough eyes for 300 thousand kilometers. It is unlikely that two or three won traffic starts are worth the money.
So, the summary.
VAZ 2110 6 cars with the Opel C20XE engine and VAZ 2109 9 / "> VAZ 21099–91 with VAZ-415 RPDs, to put it mildly, are different, not only in appearance and price, but also in character.
The solid appearance and “filling” of “one hundred and sixth” give the driver confidence in the capabilities of the car. And she is available not only assertive acceleration, but also speeds of 200 km / h. This, probably, allows to amuse pride, competing with BMW, Audi and the like.
Rotary VAZ 2109 9 / "> VAZ 21099–91 is a wolf in sheep's clothing. A thoroughly outdated appearance coexists with explosive temperament. Acceleration to" hundreds "in less than 9 seconds and a top speed of over 190 km / h allow many ambitious drivers to show off those who, for one reason or another, are more attracted to the "ninety-ninth."
