BMW X5 test
MISTER “X” LEAVES ASPHALT
The all-wheel drive BMW X5 wagon debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999 and only a year later was introduced in Europe. It is equipped with two V-shaped engines: the "eight", 4.4 liters, 286 liters. with. and the "six", 3.0 liters, 231 liters. with. In the future, another three-liter diesel engine with direct fuel injection. The gearbox is a five-speed automatic with electronically-hydraulic control and a self-adjusting Steptronic control system.
Work on the BMW X5 went on for a long time under a veil of secrecy. The all-wheel drive car for those who profess such an active lifestyle is now a novelty in the model range of the Bavarian company and it was necessary to create excitement around it in advance. Now everything is behind us, and we, already in our native expanses, can test the car that we have known so far only in absentia (ЗР, 1999, No. 10).
The first sensation - in reality, the X-fifth is larger than it looks in the photo. The appearance of the car is clearly focused on the requirements of the American market - the main absorber of powerful all-wheel drive. At the same time (we give tribute to the creators of the car) externally BMW X5 - one hundred percent "Bavarian". Unless the blind person notices the characteristic “nostrils” of the false radiator grille, the traditional “four-eyed” xenon headlights. Relief bumpers appeared below the “waterline”, and plastic door sills clearly hint at the very active lifestyle, which involves driving not only on roads.
To match a solid car and engine. Agree, the V-shaped “eight” with a working volume of 4.4 liters is a very serious application, however, like 210 kW of maximum power, and 440 N.m of torque. Against the background of such indicators, more than two tons of curb weight are mere trifles. Naturally, electronics cannot be dispensed with here. The car is saturated to the limit with the latest systems. The traditional ABS is combined with two others - dynamic braking control and cornering braking control. One more thing to help them - dynamic stability control (DSC). Automatically slowing down and, if necessary, reducing engine power, it prevents slipping while cooling the ardor of too zealous riders. For fans of off-road adventures, automatic speed control on the descent is provided. In critical situations, this system (HDS) maintains it at a constant level of 8 km / h.
Now to the point. Full of awe, we are trying to get into the BMW interior. It turns out that this is not so simple. The massive door, also spring-loaded by the limiter, requires remarkable efforts, especially in tight parking lots, where it cannot be opened with one jerk. Inside is the well-known style of Bavarian cars. Only an unusually high landing and a massive front panel hint at belonging to all-terrain vehicles. The rest are the same convenient controls, excellent seats with an abundance of adjustments and their widest ranges, and, of course, the BMW business card is a traditional instrument cluster with a somewhat archaic arrow pointer for instant fuel consumption. In the center of the front panel there is an impressive display screen, on which not only the information of the on-board computer is displayed, but also everything related to radio and television programs. Needless to say, all this is tastefully “packaged” in leather and wood, so that the owner does not doubt for a second the significance of his acquisition. In a word, in the X5 cabin you feel like in a good expensive limousine, and regardless of where you are sitting, front or rear.
Before we set off, let's look into the luggage compartment. Its dimensions are impressive, although the high floor gives out the bulkiness of the rear suspension, "eaten" a lot of useful space. The hinged side aroused some doubt: it, of course, is convenient to use as a table or bench, but at the same time it will be very difficult to get into the bowels of the trunk.
The main thing in the Bavarian all-wheel drive is the engine. Its 286 liters. with. enough to effortlessly pluck a two-ton colossus, easily and naturally dispersing it right up to 208 km / h. Moreover, by the speed of speeding you feel that the X5 is capable of more, but the electronic limiter intervenes - it makes sure that the speed limit of the tires is not exceeded - 210 km / h. All this is staggering at first. Then you get used to it and enjoy the powerful acceleration, sometimes barely noticeable interrupted by the soft work of the five-speed automatic transmission. There are practically no complaints about the latter, it logically coexists with a temperamental motor. It comes to the point that even manual control seems unnecessary. Why all this fuss with a lever, when the "automatic" adapts to the driving style and so understands everything from a half hint?
If we have already managed to disperse such a colossus, we must also stop it. Once again, the X5 demonstrates its outstanding capabilities: an honest 38.9 meters of stopping distance from 100 km / h - an excellent result! Only a powerful deceleration and a slight chirp of ABS signal extreme braking. True, on wet ground after rain, we immediately see the asphalt inclinations of the tires. Regardless of the inscription M + S, their tread is immediately “greasy, ” and the car responds with a touch of the brake pedal with an anti-lock system, almost slowing down.
Another skate of all BMWs is handling. At first glance, our ward is no exception. Small banks, moderate but intelligible feedback, quick and accurate responses to actions by the steering wheel - all this is more typical for a passenger car than for an all-terrain vehicle. But it costs, having believed in the ability of the X-fifth, to slightly cross the line of what is permissible, as the car immediately falls out of the turn to the "sound" of electronics trying to fix your mistake. Together, we set the car on a given trajectory, slightly frightening those sitting in the passenger compartment and discovering, moreover, the very modest coupling capabilities of the tires, at least in the lateral direction.
And what if you turn off all this electronics? As they approach acceptable limits, the X5s become even more insidious. First, you come across the familiar slippage of the front axle, and then, afterwards, with a sharp drift of the rear axle, from which it is difficult to “catch” a two-ton colossus. So it’s not so interesting with electronics, but it’s much calmer …
The creators of the suspension car paid a lot of attention. What is only the rear axle with pneumatic elements instead of springs. I had to go on like this in order to maintain a constant position of the body, regardless of the load. Well, for an all-terrain vehicle this is important, only in some other conditions will the suspension turn out to be excessively stiff. If the car looks almost comfortable on smooth asphalt, then with the advent of traditional Russian pits and bumps, rear passengers begin to experience inconvenience from sudden shocks. The assumption immediately arises: the pendants are stiff and at the same time “impenetrable”. However, the very first obstacle in the form of an asphalt fold left by the road workers makes the front suspension, which is less complicated, clang loudly with limiters. Where the X-fifth is really good, it’s on relatively smooth graders: here you can “fly” with almost asphalt speeds.
In a nutshell about the sound of the exhaust. He caresses the hearing of those sitting in front with a pleasant bass sniff, but for those who are behind, pleasantness is replaced by an annoying volume. Otherwise, the X5 surprisingly correctly treats your ears - it does not annoy either the roar of a powerful motor, or aerodynamic whistles.
At the end of our walk, let's turn closer to nature. Two hundred millimeters of ground clearance, powerful engine protection and all-wheel drive are encouraging at first. But not for long. In Russian conditions, both more serious tires and off-road abilities are needed. Our ward allows us to turn into a country road, dive into the forest you like, but the very first dirt abruptly cools the ardor of the “Bavarian”: despite his electronic blockages, he immediately sits on his belly.
In the now fashionable European currency, the BMW X5 costs about 89, 000 euros. The price is very serious even for those who have very large amounts. True, for this money, the buyer acquires a car not only with a name, but also with a very high level of intelligence.
BMW X5 is so smart
that he himself cannot decide
to whom he is closer - off-road vehicles or ordinary prestigious limousines.
