It doesn’t matter how old the car is. Much more important is how many salty winters she experienced.

Having salted the gas tank flap in a special chamber, experts are trying to predict when the paint will swell on the car and how long the body will last. But laboratory conditions, although they provide objective information, are still far from real life. Who tried to put such an experiment on the whole machine? Our "Gazelle" "floated" in a street brine for five Moscow winters. Every spring, before the inspection, the rust was cleaned, tinted, and the anti-corrosion coating was restored as best they could. In a word, like any caring owner, they tried to keep the car longer. But each next spring brought more and more red spots.

The most vulnerable parts were the engine compartment and hood. In winter it is warm and damp: for rust, the climate itself. For four years, the inner panels of the hood turned into dust, and for five he rusted through. The bottom of the cab and the adjacent part of the frame are perfectly preserved. The engine should be thanked for this - the oil oozes out a little through the seal on the rear end of the crankshaft and, spraying with a flywheel, reliably blocks the path of water, enveloping the parts with greasy porridge. Under it, factory paint is still preserved. The wings, wheel arches, doors, and steps of their soldering did not get oil, and in the first winter their internal surfaces began to peel off a little. They were cleaned, without stint, covered with gun grease and installed fenders. And yet, after the fifth winter, the metal could not stand it - it burst. The doors were completely leaky and there is no sense in protecting them anymore - there will be no worse.

The seams of the cab swelled like spring buds. Rust rushing out of them so that nothing can hold it. Tinting only preserves a decent appearance, but is essentially useless. Only the roof is relatively good. Tarnished, it nevertheless successfully resists aggression.

The cross members of the frame are still alive due to their thickness. Do not paint - there is no result, so it remains to be hoped that the car will not fall apart before being written off.

It would seem that the sides of the body, aired best of all, should be eternal. But no, where the sheet is double, the same story. Most went to the rear side and room lights. The latter turn into rusty lumps by spring and must be replaced assembly.

Awning. It was enough for four years, and then conditionally. After two, he began to let water through, and after two more, the material finally coarsened and cracked. Steel rings - eyelets fell out of the fabric, and the frame began to protrude, like Rocinante's ribs.

However, it’s too early to write off the car. Despite the solid mileage, she somehow able to work, so she deserved a prize - new doors, hood, wings and awning. We hope that they will be enough for the period allotted to her by fate.
