Efficiency and ecology - these are two key areas of development of modern automotive industry. More and more “hybrid vehicles” are appearing on the market, or at least such cars that operate in the city in start-stop mode, turning off the engine at each traffic light. But what to do with air conditioning? If his compressor does not work, then in the hot summer a couple of minutes will be enough for the riders to sweat pretty much. A wet autumn day will have to start with fogged windows. You can, of course, make an independent electric drive of the compressor, but then the battery will not last for a long time - and the car, what good, will remain at the traffic light …

The Behr company decided to approach the issue on the other hand, turning the air conditioner itself into a battery, but not electricity, but a cold that would be consumed during short stops. First, of course, we collected statistics. It turned out that the average stopping time is 23 s, not exceeding the maximum 62 s. At the same time, the share of downtime in the urban cycle was 22%. (Well, this, of course, is “with them, ” not in Moscow.)

The idea was to attach an additional section to the evaporator of the air conditioner, filled with a special substance, freezing / melting at + 5 ° C. During movement, this section will gain a supply of cold, and during stops it will give it to the air blown by the fan. To increase efficiency, at the same time the engine is stopped, the air conditioning system switches to the recirculation mode: after all, the air in the cabin is colder than outside. And still, it was not possible to store the cold from the purged air: the necessary 4 minutes is too long, the stops follow each other more often.
