Four years ago - at the Beijing Motor Show - the debut of the Peugeot 408 sedan took place. In the spring of 2010, sales began in China, and in the fall of that year, production began in Argentina and sales in South America. But if you recall that the sedan designed for emerging markets was built on an extended Peugeot 308 hatchback truck (manufactured since 2007) and unified with it in many body and interior details, it turns out that the age of the model is already very respectable. Actually, the base 308th generation changed last year, moreover, they presented not only a hatchback, but also a station wagon - Peugeot 308 SW. So now it’s the turn to upgrade and the Peugeot 408 sedan. This is confirmed by photographs of a camouflaged prototype captured by "spies" during trials on French roads.
From the pictures, we meticulously restored the appearance of the future news, and our editorial artist, as usual, prepared the illustrations. In proportions, the new 408th is similar to the current model - that is, it also has an increased wheelbase compared to the hatchback. Therefore, it is logical to assume that he, like his predecessor, borrowed the platform from the Peugeot 308 SW station wagon (it also has an increased base). However, this point is still not completely clear, because there is a possibility that the platform of the new sedan will migrate from the previous generation. In favor of this version is the recent debut in the Chinese market of the Citroen DS 5LS sedan, which borrowed the truck from the Citroen C4, a direct relative of the current 408.

Actually, for the sake of this, the four-door update was started - so that it does not look pale against the background of younger rivals. The point, of course, is not only in appearance. At the same time, equipment has been pulled up to the modern level. Especially in terms of electronic driver assistants and other systems that provide active safety. Surely you should wait for the multimedia innovations in the cabin, because progress in this area in recent years has been especially noticeable, and modern models have gone ahead. It is likely that the new 408th will take the main decisions on the layout of the front panel and the interior as a whole from the current 308th family. But it cannot be ruled out that he will seriously differ in this regard. Still, the sedan is focused mainly on the markets of Asia, Russia, South America and partly Eastern Europe, where customers are more conservative.

The same conservatism, as well as the quality of fuel in these markets and the technological level of service, will most likely affect the formation of the line of power units. So, we are unlikely to have 3-cylinder turbo engines that are equipped with the Peugeot 308 in Europe. Most likely, the engine line will migrate from the current generation of the 408th (including a 1.6-liter turbodiesel) and, possibly, will be expanded due to a more powerful version of the 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine. The main criterion for the appearance of such a version will be the possibility of aggregation with automatic transmission, without which success in the Russian market is almost impossible.

While there is no clarity with the timing (and indeed the prospects) for the appearance of the next generation Peugeot 408 in the domestic market, the current model continues to be produced at the Kaluga plant and is relatively successfully implemented. To warm up consumer interest in it, the Russian representative office of the company organized a run for journalists on the Kola Peninsula. The goal is to check how confident diesel engines will behave in the harsh conditions of the Arctic (it was in December).
The route was laid from the hero city of Murmansk - the largest port in the world at high latitudes - to the town located in the spurs of the Khibiny Mountains, Kirovsk, which is not only famous for its apatite-nepheline enterprises, but also is a quite popular ski center in our country. Starting the engine in the early morning did not cause difficulties. True, the temperature on the street did not fall below -8 ° C - sheer nonsense for the local places. But there were no problems even later, already in Kirovsk, when the frost approached the mark of minus 20 °. But problems awaited us along the way. Not with cars, though, but with the weather. A terrible snowstorm rose, and the road in the rays of the headlights (in December on the Kola Peninsula begins to dawn closer to twelve) almost completely ceased to be visible. We had to navigate mainly on the marker lights in front of the going trucks (there was no question of overtaking). But the weather in the North tends to change almost instantly. Somewhere closer to the middle of the path, the snowstorm stopped and even the sun glimmersed on the clouds (the luminary itself did not appear here at that time due to the horizon). And we could only enjoy the fabulously snowy landscapes of the Russian Arctic running through the windows …
